Hsu Min-long, of the Lotus Heart Vegetarian Restaurant in Chungho,
near Taipei, claimed a young man arrived on a motorbike last week
with a bag of money.
"He gave me 480,000 Taiwan dollars (15,000 US dollars) and asked me
to use the money to cook vegetarian meals for the public," Hsu told
reporters.
"The money is enough to cook vegetarian meals for 10,000 people. I
have invited low-income families and children in orphanages to come
and eat, but still it is far from 10,000 people," he said.
So Hsu phoned a newspaper, asking it to report the free-food
invitation.
Hsu plans to start serve free meal from 11 am until 9 pm for eight
consecutive Sundays.
The man who paid for the meals would did reveal his name or the
purpose of his generosity, the restaurant owner said.
In Taiwan, people sometimes offer free vegetarian meals to
strangers to thank Buddha for a wish granted, or to try to do good
deeds to seek peace of mind or long life for oneself or one's
parents.
