A three-hour fundraising telecast hosted by the Taiwan Broadcasting
System brought in NT$114 million (US$3.8 million) for victims of
the recent earthquake in Japan, organizers said March 17.
“I would like to thank the care and concern that the people of
Taiwan have shown to the people of Japan,” said Mai Sato, a
Japanese celebrity working in Taiwan.
“Many of my friends have asked me to pass on their gratitude to the
support Taiwan is offering to Japan,” Aisa Senda, another
Taiwan-based Japanese singer, said. “We will not give up.”
Over 300 celebrities took turns picking up 60 donation phone lines
and performing songs, in the hope that through the power of music,
victims of the magnitude-9 earthquake and tsunami that hit Japan
March 11 can be comforted.
Among the performers was Judy Ongg, a Taiwan-born actress and
singer who has lived in Japan since the age of 2. She was in Taiwan
for a quake relief event after a magnitude-7.3 earthquake struck
Nantou County Sept. 21, 1999.
On the evening of March 18, celebrity artist Bai Bing-bing will
hold a second fundraising broadcast, during which ROC President Ma
Ying-jeou, first lady Chow Mei-ching, singers Chang Hui-mei and
Jody Chiang will be among those to answer the 120 donation phone
lines.
In addition, local artists are scheduled to perform “Believe,” a
song composed especially for the quake-relief efforts.
The stations broadcasting the second telethon live include Taiwan’s
Chinese Television System Inc. and China Television Co. and Japan’s
Nippon Television Network Corp., according to organizers. (HZW)
