Where do you sit in a conventional taxi??

I'm referring to the local culture. Where is the socially acceptable seats for a solo passenger to take when boarding a taxi, is it the front seat or the back seat and why?

For myself, I always take the back seat as I get more space to put my bags and relax however I have been garnering various conflicting views. Therefore please enlighten me, thanks in advanced..
