Now that the by-election is over, here are some questions in
mind.
1. What went wrong to the PAP strategy in this
by-election? Having successfully made it a local issue.
2. Is rivervale mall really an issue?. I mean yes, the project
stalled but would you point the finger at the MP?
3. What went wrong to the RP and SDA?
1. This by election was a de facto referendum on the MIW's
performance since 2011. So the results indicate that voters are
still very unhappy at them. Putting an inexperienced guy up for
running was also a misstep that smacked of hubris. They probably
expected an easy win in light of a four-corner fight. They should
have put up someone else like Michael Palmer's deputy or
understudy.
2. Local issues like the mall were probably minor. National
issues like housing and transport were more on the minds of
voters.
3. RP should just call themselves The Cult of JBJ. People saw
Kenny as being too weak to be his own man than to be his father's
son. Desmond screwed up with the online rallies that alienated old
people who know nothing about YouTube and younger people who can
speak better English.
