(not much experience in driving auto cars)

hmm, when you're accelerating, at the stage where it changes from 3rd gear to 4th gear, when your pressure on the accelerator remains constant, it seems that the car drags in the 3rd gear, and doesn't change up to 4th gear too readily. Anyone have this problem? i'm unwilling to step on the accelerator more to make it accelerate faster due to FC, so what i normally do is i release the accelerator a bit, and almost instantly, the car changes to the 4th gear. Is this standard procedure, or do you guys not face this problem?

Btw, i'm driving an auto 2001 nissan sunny N16.

I experience this too when I accelerate gradually, but most of the time i change gear at around 3000 RPM or more so I don’t really encounter it that often heh

Hey dude,maybe can help,

try this ...

1> you are at a certian speed and the 3rd gear keeps dragging, try releasing the accel pedal abit then gentle-ly accel back again

2> Is your O/D button off-ed? that could cause the car to drag at a lower gear too

if you want your car to kick down gear, just nudge the pedal abit, the car should kick down one gear for you ...

When you release the pressure to the accelerator and as long as your rev is enough.. the gear will change..

instead if you keep dragging on it..it doesnt change..

yep its a bit draggy, so i normally release the pedal a bit and it’ll change gears. what i want to know though, is that is it a normal procedure? as in you guys do it too? or just heck care and let it drag?

It’s not really a problem… Lot’s of people use that to make their auto-trans car pick up faster. Hold it at that point and the car picks up, then either push down, or release a little and the gear shifts up. Good no? Gives a you a little control over the gear changes.

Just remember as a general rule, the more u depress the accelerator translate to the auto gearbox that you need more power; what happens when you need more power is that the gearbox will hold or downshift if necessary. So if u want to shift up, you should indicate to the gearbox that you dun need the power by slightly easing off the accelerator, provided there is already sufficient power for the next higher gear.

You can actually leave the gearbox to D and control the gears using the accelerator, be it upshift or downshift

Note too, that there are more responsive as well as less responsive gearbox, ie not all gearbox are the same. You might experience a slightly longer time for the upshft / downshift in a different cars.

Yeah, i've been playing around with the accelerator these days, and when i'm not in a hurry generally i tend to change gears around 2k-3k RPM. when im late, i normally change gears at slightly over 3k RPM, at 3.1k or so.

Btw, i'm about to kill this damn Sunny. The FC is amazingly high, i only went like 9.5km/l on SPC ULG 92!! (my dad is pretty heavy footed on the accelerator though) Urgh!

i do that too… sometimes, i drag the car from rest to 50kph at 4000rpm, release the accel and press again to 60kph, this is where my auto car changes to 3 gear, then i just release and step on the accel again to attain 3rd gear… did this just to have more power when rushing for time… bad for the engine and higher FC, so did it only occasionally…

i wanna know how does this OD thing actually increase FC. i mean when driving with manual car, dont drivers like change gears at the same rpm as those in OD ?

Wait wait wait wait!!!!!! have you go and replace your air sensor already?! there is a air sensor recall for B16 sunny's .... go to the Tan chong motor webby to check it out ... maybe thats the problem there! Exclamation

is it? they recalled B16? Mine’s a N16 though…anyway i think i heard of it…but the car belonged to my dad then and i recall him saying that ours was affected. No idea though…checking out Tan Chong.
