It is interesting to me that his language habits which are
clearly foreign (has almost no trace of any Singaporean accent) is
being labelled as "eloquent and refreshing"
If he is from establishment.....wooooo........totally 180 degree
opposite.....
:D
He spent 30 years overseas - 3 degrees (mostly scholarships)
from top universities in the US and UK. Later worked in China,
Beijing as an international lawyer.
In the clip, the part where he spoke to the residence, and if you
hear the clips carefully (very faint), he also spoke in simple
hokkien like 'kamsia di' etc.
I hate to say this and I don't wish to offend anyone or start
a flame thread here.
Singaporeans have huge pride in themselves - our language, our
dialects, our habits etc.
I say it is refreshing to hear Chen speaks because he didn't
speak with thick American slang - he could, you
know. He also didn't speak with China heavy
Beijing accent - he also could, you know.
What I heard from him is that he tried to speak in proper
English and Mandarin.
To me, proper English does not mean our Singaporean
accent only or at least he didn't fake Snglish or fake,
hokkien laced mandarin to impress us. When he didn't fake
anything so as to impress, he came across as sincere - at least to
me.
He is a polished and educated man and he needs
not hide, appologize or fake it. This his strength
and he let it shows - without arrogance.
