1) I'm gonna have to agree that if our unemployment goes up significantly because of minimum wage laws, then major exploitation of lowly paid workers has taken place.

2) According to this article, the authors argued that it might not be fair if minimum wage laws have been applied to Singaporeans and not the PR and foreigners. I think this is the real can of worms.

We've taken a huge influx of low-skilled laborers from a number of countries outside. That has benefited companies and even the government in terms of building projects and even maintenance. Cost of hiring these workers are low and if a minimum wage law comes in, the companies and even the government will end up spending more money. Sad to say, we've also joined the ranks of those who exploits third world countries for our own development.

I agree with point 1 wholeheartedly and the hypothesis in point 2 is very possible and I'm inclined to suspect it might be the case as well.

When economy bad and many pple are searching for jobs and are jobless, that is where employers will push the salary down to the min. Who cares whether that staff can survive or not.

Nothing can the govt do...but can only advise and set rules for the companies? Ultimately, companies have the final say in the end.

Back to square one, do we did a minimum wage? Dun compare with other countries, just singapore alone, do we really need a minimum wage to run this country wage issue? My take is no, I have alway a free market with a free float on wages.

and there is this uncles about 49 yo came and ask for job as a general helper in my family catering business, saying that he is poor and cannot find a job, we employed him under re-employment of older worker contract. He told us he got a old mother, 3 kids and a housewife to take care for..just got retrenched in some logistic company, so we offered him the job at $1200 with all the benefits. As he walk out of my brother office, held up his iphone, and a minute later, a young beautiful prc gal came over, hold his hand and together walk down the street to hail for a taxi. You call that poor?? or you call that making yourself poor??

Back to square one.... are you against minimum wage law because you felt cheated the uncle could afford iphone and beautiful young prc girl with $1200 salary and felt you could have given less?

He got a few books to sell that had translated into so many languages, his memoir is going to be international best seller, and he got a Lee and Lee's law firm to earn big for him where all top business engaged his firm, and since he is british trained and started in the era of pension, he still is eligible to take his pension base on his last draw salary, which is about 3m. Charlie Chaplin did not take all these into consideration when quoting MM Lee paid.

My goodness, whenever i quote something, there is alway salt and pepper added, hahaha...I am not going against that old uncle in anything he did in the public, if he wants to flaunt his money, that is up to him, what I am implying is that at the end of the day, he dun come in and said that he is poor and govt did not help him or whatever this society is unfair to him and all those nonsense. If you are loyal to your family, trying hard to raise a family, not to mention that you did not do well in your study during your young times, so end up doing menial jobs here and there and said that you are poor, I would had agree on it.

Anyway, that Uncle had started to work for us, he is quite good, know where to deliver food to those lorongs for those gals.
