Local graduate pessimistic about her future

Job market still not looking too good leh. So much supply of labour out there with little new jobs.

the sad reality in singapore if you are professional looking for jobs.

Here is the current situation. Years of Experience don't mean nothing. Professionals are increasingly become a commodity that Salary is being Traded at Price point.

actually what the graduate is fighting now is based on 4 fronts

1st front- people of older age than her and also more experiance than her, especially those that have no jobs atm

2nd front-people who are from the same batch as her, new grads , this area is sub divided into 2 areas, 1 is willing to take lower pay and do anything just to get the job, the other is smooth talker,able to talk their way into getting the job.

3rd front- froiegn workers also have a stiff competition here, as i have put it, they are willing to take lower payment just to undercut competition, both to their own kind and to the locals here

4th front- if the time of jobless grow longer, the TS also have to fight with additional graduates from those who are graduate later than her. e.g if she graduate in 2010, remains unemployed till 2012, then she have to fight all the 3 plus the graduates from 2011 and maybe 2012 depending on the month of that year.

Singapore no more PSLE graduate. Fail PSLE, they also push you up.

The lowest is N level. Even with N level, they also push you to ITE.

whatever, what i meant was, the lower educated peoples are going thru their hard life here as simple as possible, and within, they hv to endure and tolerate the high cost, inflation and being more or less casted one side, but then, they still strive thru life, build family and carry on with what they are doing...as a graduate, i should see a better person who are much able to take the hardknock of lifes than a layman, he/she who attained high education level should be able to think better and well organise in life. But i find graduate today are the complaining lots, little bit of problem only, start to whine and curse on life, which in the first place, had treated them well.

its true what.study so much for what? how to compete for foreigners with their lower salary? very soon you will find that graduates will have structural unemployment in the workforce. you will find graduates unable to find jobs and start driving taxis for a living, start a hawker stall, and so forth.

People here have a very wrong concept of studying, to singaporeans, studying is to get good salary, good jobs and high post. And that is very wrong. In taiwan and also in many other countries, this is secondary, the primary objectives of studying is to gain knowledge of the know how and why and also to civlise/discipline oneself as a scholar, which is benefical to the society at large.

the notion is, i studied because i want to be a better person, more knowledgeable and more understanding, not simply just for paid and jobs ya.

Structural unemployment is a term use to say that there are jobs, but peoples are not skill enough to work on it. Not because you are a graduate with knowledge and skill and still cannot get job, it is infact, in a way good that graduates today have to compete for jobs, and once you need to compete, you dun become complacent but instead fight for your bread and butter. There are graduates who are successful in life, there are some end up selling phone cards, it doesn't mean if you are a graduate, you will be successful , you need to work on it, take failure as a way to success and if you need to compete in a global market, so be it, show your strength and power. No boss are blind and certainly no one owe you a living ya

grads earnin $8k/mth after age 35???that is a myth.most engineers after graduating and 40 years old cant even get a$3k/mth engineer post....unless u go setup yer own company.

i hate to break it to u but what u read or heard is rubbish from the times where degree holders in spore were hard to come by in the 1960's.

if spore had salary which gave degree hiolder engineers $8k/mth then why would there be superintendents from shipyards immigrating to australia to start life anew??!!!it simply tells u the jobs in spore may be as good as working for food and shelter...no savings or not much savings.

True, there will be some fresh grads who make $3-4K upon graduation (as featured in the media sometimes) and there will be some 35 year olds making $8K a month (lawyers, bankers, consultants, doctors etc) but they are definitely in the very small minority.

My take is the average salary for a fresh grad is around $2-2.5K and a 35 year old grad should be around $4 to 4.5K.

For the past 15 years, how many recessions or global economic crisis have occured? (this affects salaries in terms of pay freezes, job loss etc)

'97 - Asian financial crisis

'01 - Dot com crash / Sept 11

'03 - SARS

'08 - Credit crisis

And some people even think that every year, the average worker gets 10% increments.

Not to mention in Singapore, there is the "cheaper, better, faster" movement from the influx of cheap foreign labour into all sectors of the Sg economy.

Singapore companies seek less experience personnel to be Managers so that they don't have to pay them higher salary.

currently job advertisment in the paper managers only get pay around 3500 to 4000.

No lar... they earn abt 18/hr... take home roughly 2.5k aud after tax and super(CPF).

If you garbage collector earn more... those that drive of stand behind rubbish truck de... meybe 3k+ a little more take home.

the ironic of grad is that when i am graduated, i make sure i get a high ranking job in any organisation hierrachy, sit comfortably in a nice private office with a good seaview, pretty gals and handsome guys working for you, can use lots of company benefits etc etc...that is only a myth, as i said, what is graduate today, whistle only, 10 lorries of graduates waiting for job liao...

I do have a grad friend who's earning $1k+ a month

But his degree is in social science....

For uni engineering degrees, most 2nd Upper and above are taking in from $2.5k to $3k a month.

Got fren with 3rd class honours taking in $2.4k gross monthly, but year end bonus got 9 months worth. But work 5.5 days week at Jurong Island.

Govt defence sector employs local uni engineers >$3k too, to the tune of $3.8k for males 1st class. Early promotion for local males as well as the 2 yrs in army are considered as work experience.

P.S. Talking about those who grad in May 2008.

Engineers in Singapore are always on the losing end

But I heard NUS last year not a lot of ECE grads... Dropped since my time... Maybe this is part of the reason.

Even if starting pay high now, the "cheaper, better, faster" movement advocated by the government will prevent salaries from rising too much.

Remember, they are going to increase the population by another 1 million in the next few years.

Increased supply coupled with very limited job opportunities will mean people will have to adjust their salary expectations very low to compete for the job.
