TEMASEK REVIEW
In a sign that the ruling PAP is becoming more and more
unpopular with the people, a relief cabby was charged in court
today for threatening his Member of Parliament Lee Yi Shyan in
March this year.
52 year old Mr Teo Kian Seng allegedly reminded Lee of Yio Chu
Kang MP Seng Han Tong’s torching incident and told him that he
hoped “history will not repeat itself” during a meet-the-people
session.
Mr Teo told the media that he had gone to see Lee over a summons
his mother had received from the Town Council for causing
“obstruction” along the corridor.
He did not mention the outcome of the meeting or why he made the
statement to Lee. It was not revealed who made the police report –
Lee or one of his grassroots leaders.
If convicted, Mr Teo faces a jail term of up to two
years and/or a fine.
Since the Seng Han Thong incident, PAP MPs have become unusually
“sensitive” to verbal “threats” from residents. Seng’s attacker,
also a cabby Ong Kah Chua, has been remanded at IMH at the
President’s “pleasure” to this very day.
A garang-guni man was sentenced to six months
imprisonment last year for threatening to beat up his MP Denise
Phua over the REACH hotline.
A few weeks later, a 17 year old mentally challenged
youth was arrested immediately by the police for slamming a chair
against the door during a meet-the-people session with PAP MP Lim
Hwee Hua.
He was probably let off with a warning since he was never
charged in court.
Singaporeans
are reminded to be extra gentle, polite and careful with their
choice of words when they meet their PAP MPs. Please keep your
heads low and speak softly in their presence.
In other developed countries, MPs are merely servants of
the people. It seems to be the other way round in
Singapore.
