Corporate satisfy Shareholders with return in investment, Govt satisfy its Citizens, provide job for them and give opportunity for them, to get educated, to get prosperous, and to get healthier, peace and harmony.

If shareholders find that the CEO is not worth the job, they can alway get rid of him/her with a certain compensation. If citizens find that govt is not suitable to rule the country, they can alway vote them out. Fair?

Good paid Ministers of Singapore is not a new issue, it had been around since the 90s, but majority peoples of Singapore still vote them. This alone gives them the mandate that they are worth that much. Question?

Lost in investment is not only the govt alone, most investors lost in the last year financial crisis including my daddy, it is not some thing that the govt lost and others win, it is a global lost, and these billions lost were gain taken from the early years, just like we gain 200 billions and now lost 100 billions, what is the big deal? We are still in blue, we still can pour billions into the market to stimulate the economy, just ask yourself, is their lost which is still a gain if you audit a 10 years consolidating account, led you to sleep in the street with no food??? or that everything come to a standstill, and that sing dollars you are holding is less valuable than Baht, Ringgit or USA dollars??? Think hor.

Throughout the decades of PAP rules, we had gone thru so many crisis, and everytime, we come up fast and furious, i have no doubt that PAP has master the skill of handling crisis management, and most singaporeans like me, are not blind to it,
not to say that there is no capable oppositions (which I dun think there is), if the govt is changed, another crisis is to hit Singapore, which will happen, i have doubt that they can handle it.

I certainly don't disagree, i have several Chinese friends myself. Perhaps i am too much of an arse or too much of an anti social jerk but having thousands of Chinese friends seems to me to be a little difficult to get a detailed picture.

However, i see the problems in China as a neccessary step rather than a chronic problem. I'm sure we can both agree that the workers' and humans right record for America for the 1st half of the last century wasn't exactly astounding either.

There was also this saying from the Chinese, that there was a crucial point in time when Xiang Yu and Liu Ban fought, and as we all know it, Liu Ban won the war and established the Han dynasty. Some of my friends said that Liu Ban is more the scheming sort, and thus, established the scheming characteristics of our race (He burned all his generals to death after he won the war). If Xiang Yu had won, whom is known more for his pride and valor, the Chinese race might be different now. Whether it's for the better or worse, I don't know

Singaporean got rebates, govt give money, good retirement place, free to move about, good nice foods to eat, 5 meals per day somemore, good houses with full aircon, electricity, water and clean enivronment. Good coffee, nice ice cream, peace, harmony, jobs, education, and also can go for tour, nice shopping centres, good transportation system, trustfull financial sectors, banks, toto, 4D, quality goods, high tech, good nightspots to go to, can make money, plenty of opportunities...etc etc

Even if you ask those protestors in other countries about Singapore, they will tell you that you are damn stupid to protest for nothing?

Other countries also give tax credits, have better pension schemes, free to move about, good nice food to eat, 5 meals per day somemore (maybe even 6 if you want to grow fat), good landed property with aircon and heater, electricity, water and clean environment.

Better coffee, better ice cream, may not have as much peace but much more freedom, harmony, jobs, education, and can go for MORE tours (coz country's bigger), nice shopping centres, not too bad transportation system, good financial sectors (Australia banks are doing MUCH better than Singapore banks, and offer fixed deposits of up to 6% or more p.a), lottery, quality goods, more high tech than Singapore, lots of options for nightlife (not just that few in Singapore), can make money, plenty of opportunities... etc etc

Other countries also do not import foreign labour like water, protect the locals in the middle job market segment, cost of living lower than Singapore, create jobs of higher value so that there are more opportunities to move up rather than retrain and retrain and retrain, and do not tell you you are stupid when you are past 40

If I ask any forumer here on why you are making such a big fuss out of mundane stuff, they will probably just laugh at you, coz you are just like our govt, doing selective comparisons, and not facing the truth of the root of the problems.

You're talking about a country with 1.3 billion, simple statistics would have meant there would be more selfish individuals who are more interested in a quick buck. India has more than its fair share of horrendous scandals like its organ market so there's little basis for it to be culturally based.

In my past dealing when i was working with a shanghai boss they would take every opportunity to take advantage of one another just like towards any singaporean or westerner if they have a chance. Do not mistaken by the fact that the only way to enter into business dealing is thru relationship but thereafter is all Knife and Dagger.

Back in the early 90s i was with Survey research group China and went into china to conduct consumer research we always approach the city population statistics department to recruit individuals. In these events you realized that under commun rule family units are documented and relatively small and dispersed. So the traddition large family village no longer exist for at least 1 generation.

As of now these has been translated to 2nd generations the least.

Culturally you have to relook at impact socially after communist rules.

There are actually big differences between northern, and southern Chinese, when historically northern china is where chinese civilization began, homes of government and officials, later, industrialization was also more advanced in the northern; whereas the southerners were called the barbarians 南蛮, more agricultural rather than industrialized, more traders and businessmen than scholars and industrialists. On being cunning, the businessmen in the south are experts, on being scheming, the officials in the north are no 1. But, looking outside of china, knife and daggers are no propriotory rights of the people in china, at least they treat everybody the same.

There are a lot more positive sides in the differences. If we only look at the negative sides, we will not be able to fully understand the people.

In HK, when somebody got knocked down by a car, they blamed themselves for not being careful, in Singapore, we blame the driver, the traffic police, the government...so even in the south south, people are different.

Small family remains a family. Compared to individual, a family member respects the parents over his own rights, takes responsibility over his children over his own social freedom, .... One child policy reduces the size of a family, and it was communism (party over family) that was causing the erosion of family values in china. But now, in a larger picture, urbanization and western values (individualism) are now the main culpit of the erosion of traditional family values, in China and outside China, whatever the political belief.

the funny part is that, in this world, most in the north are consider to be educated, white, rich and powerful. Same goes to india, some goes to land of america, and also to thailand, to china, maybe only south africa can do well in africa.

To the point of tradditional family model. i doubt that the current economics model in most countries allow families to grow. Those days of 7 brothers 3 sisters are gone....

i think you overly exagerate the impact of western influence....my chinese ex boss has 2 mistress from China one live in N.Y. the other live in L.A. and an apartment in Ching Toa and many more following the same path.

It is in human nature to excerise the right to pursue material gain and wealth. Individualism or self center is just part of securing and acqusition on material gain....or else will be a monk.
