I don't think that applies to Lee Kuan Yew because Lee Kuan Yew's first involvement in Singapore politics was to keep the british colonial rule of Singapore intact.

He didn't fight for independence of Singapore.

According to his memoirs and this website, Lee Kuan Yew then proceeded to form the PAP with the help of the communists. Yet these sources conveniently neglect to mention Lee Kuan Yew's involvement in the Singapore Progressive Party in the 1951 legislative elections. In fact, Lee acted as the election agent for his boss John Laycock, helping him to manage his campaign and canvass on his behalf. (See here and here for proof) He had thus entered into politics even before he became involved in the trade unions' dispute with the British. (Polling day for the 1951 legislative elections was on 10 April, we can assume that his political activities with the SPP started months before that)

If I may speculate, LKY joined the SPP initially to build up his political career there. However when the Rendel Constitution expanded the electoral rolls to include all local-born as voters, resulting in a significant increase in Chinese voters, LKY decided to jump ship and formed the PAP in 1954 because he saw that the SPP lacked the support of the Chinese working class. (So the next time LKY condemns politicians who change political parties, you know where he's coming from)

Yet the problem isn't solely that LKY jumped ship and didn't care to tell anyone about his great experience in his memoirs. The bigger problem lies in the fact that LKY supported the SPP despite the fact that it was A) pro-British in both its policies and in its composition of members (mostly English-speaking upper class professionals) B) unsupportive of achieving independence (it merely paid lip-service to the idea by declaring in October 1952, its objective of Singapore achieving independence through a Singapore-Malaya merger without setting a target date)

LKY's miraculous change of heart on these issues when he joined the PAP only demonstrates how the pursuit of power can sometimes make one very flexible about their beliefs. Unfortunately for us, this flexibility of LKY's did not extend to the area of political freedoms.

and whats wrong with the older singaporeans???they are also cunning,evil and all the above too!!!take some of them as kids a long time ago...i know one boy who used to chase his pet alsation and hit it with a huge thick samurai sword....he chased the dog he had and kept whacking legs,paws,face and laffed at it as it cowered in a corner pleading for life.very often that was done out of personal training by that boy all by himself every weekend.

these are the singaporeans currently in singapore....the new singaporeans are nothing new or exceptional to old version singaporeans.

do u think lky would like it if that boy who has grown up were to approah him and everyone one fine weekend?just think...............we had bred in the past mindless killing machine who kill kill and kill irregardless of any leadership or cash.

Language is use it or lose it.

But since society is english dominated due to PAP policy, even if mandarin is good, lack of using it will erode the mandarin capacity.

So in the end, as long as PAP doesn't give up its policy of Singapore being dominated by english, all the rest of the languages will be weakened and set to decline.

Language decline, culture decline; culture decline, identity decline; identity decline, sense of loss sets in, values all disrupted, morale in life also declines.

Entire society declines.

I saw in another thread that you have been away in China the past 2 years...

...so you may not be aware of the latest unemployment situation in Singapore.

The current unemployment rate for 'residents' which includes both, Singaporeans and PRs / foreigners living in Singapore, is 5.9 p/c.

That's the official numbers... but it could be more.

Like you, I think that the PAP will still form the next Government of Singapore, but for sure, especially in the internet age and the 5.9 p/c unemployment rate, they are gonna lose more seats than they anticipate.

Every forum you read, except for the YPAP site, you will find an overwhelming percentage of forumers very much against the PAP Government policies... and, frankly, who can blame them, when these policies affect them negatively ??
