He is doing this on the pretext of helping the society but deep
down it is more so for himself as his heart is full of hatred for
what the Lees had done to him. All this at the expenses of the
well-being of the society.
If that was true Chee should had joined politics after he was
sacked from NUS.
But Chee joined politics before he was
sacked.
Dr Chee had
been a fervent advocate for democracy since the days when he was
still a National University of Singapore (NUS) psychology
lecturer. In 1992, Dr. Chee joined the
SDP and according to the words of then
opposition leader Chiam See Tong he placed "his career in
jeopardy". His first election was the 1992 Marine Parade
By-election when his team won 24.5% of the votes in a People's
Action Party stronghold. He won 34.8% of the votes in the 1997
General Election in MacPherson and led another team to win 20.2% of
the votes in Jurong GRC.
In 1993, he was
sacked by NUS for allegedly misappropriate
use of research funds - the use of University funds to send
documents, despite his having secured prior verbal consent - and in
protest he staged a hunger strike, albeit while hooked to a
drip.
