Spark plugs are classified according to size and heat range. Size
refer to physical size - that is, the ability of spark plugs to
physically fit a particular engine. For each size, there is a range
of spark plugs that very according to their ability to get rid of
heat. Those plugs that are slow to dissipate heat are called
"hotter" spark plugs, while those which are quick to dissipate heat
are called "colder" spark plugs.
If plugs cannot get rid of heat fast enough, they are begins to
glow and cause pre-ignition, which is ignition of the fuel mixture
before time. Severe pre-ignition can seriously damage an
engine.
Conversely, if a spark plugs get rid of heat too fast, deposits
will form on the tips, possibly causing plugs to short circuit. The
engine will begins to misfire.
