I cant agree on the discipline issue. Other countries guys are also emotionally disciplined as they have suffered much more like civil wars, poverty and discrimination. Sometimes i see the exact opposite with sg guys, who after NS seem to be more indisciplined than before. Heard of guys who learnt how to smoke and drink, or patrooniase pros while in NS?

Is that discipline? NS duty teaches u military discipline and not emotional discipline ( which is a very low).

Bottomline is u cannot say that NS disciplines everyone and works for all. But u cannot say that lack of NS will bring about indiscipline in males.

Discipline and NS has nothing to do with each other. A person can be disciplined without NS too. Military discipline does not equate to life discipline. military discipline is about operational readiness, efficiency and team work. In short, it is related to work, not life.

Look around u , will ya, There are locals who are waiting to dismantle the PAP in the next election, people who commit molest and peeping Tom activities, A NSF who due to stress smuggles a rifle out of camp, recruits who shoot their officers during range, take MCs and keng..lots more..It does shows one that anything in moderation works, but when it is excessive, it just fails.

Did NS cause them to be disciplined?, i think NS has screwed their minds and made them to be vicious, calculative animals in their own way. It is not a hidden fact that military life brings out the savage qualities in you.

same 100 guys, all go through NS,

A) 80 of them become disciplined NS instill discipline

B) 40 of them become disciplined. NS does not instill discipline.

I agree, just looking across the causeway into our neighbourhood young peoples, not only they are given less education, but most lack of discipline and manners. Walk like ah beng, talk loud, spat here and there, smoke like no tomorrow, flip flop and no fashion, hair also highlighted wrongly.

In singapore, we are different. We are surrounded by muslims and after all, singapore was never our land to begin with.

I think my 2 1/2 years of NS is a waste of my time. It would be more acceptable if they reduce it to 12-15 months. After all, we have years of reservist to sharpen our skills.

Uncle, serve already served, if now they reduce, you more angry, and someone will say, why last time i serve 2.5 y and now only 1 y...problem never end. Take care Uncle, apply what you hv learn in army, be it Siam, Run, Hide, Hokkien, tolerances, teamwork, endurances or duty...u learned

Conscript soldiers lack dedicationa nd motivation. Picture this, in an even war occurs, many will just drop their arms and surrender. They have no expereince in war and definetly lacking the hardness of exerienced combat veterans.
