Singapore loses race to
develop the first DNA test kit for H1N1

PrimerDesign Ltd, a UK firm
founded by University of Southampton scientists, has won the race
to produce the first DNA test kit for the Mexican swine flu.
The first shipment of rapid-results tests has been sent today
directly to Mexico as well as many other territories to help
authorities monitor the increasing number of suspected cases.
Project coordinator Dr Rob Powell said: "This past Sunday at
midnight was a very special moment for us. We were able to show
conclusively that the test works."
The rapid test has results in only two hours compared to current
diagnostic tests which take two days.
"Monitoring the spread of the virus is now the key weapon
against a possible pandemic. These tests will contribute to the
global effort to halt the disease," said Dr Jim Wicks from
PrimerDesign.
The company is part of the University's SETsquared Business
Incubation programme.
The PrimerDesign swine flu real-time PCR kit is sold primarily
for research use but could be used to diagnose the disease in
laboratories globally.
QUESTIONS---
Legally speaking,is this kit from

for "detect
diseases, conditions, or infections." ( in the words of USA
FDA)?
Or just for

read the last sentence carefully.
Real-time PCR detection of
Nucleic acid testing (NAT) is the method of choice for
detection and quantification of a wide range of micro organisms.
PrimerDesign manufactures and supplies high quality quantitative
real-time PCR kits for the detection and simultaneous
quantification of numerous significant pathogens . A copy number
standard curve is provided for quantification and an the internal
extraction template (DNA or RNA), controls for the quality of the
nucleic acid extraction and eliminates false negative results.
The kit is designed with the broadest possible
detection profile to ensure that all clinically relevant strains
and subtypes are detected. Target sequences are selected by working
with data from key opinion leaders in the field. Multiple sequence
alignments and unprecedented real-time PCR expertise in design and
validation ensure the best possible kit.
Details of the target and priming specificity are included in the
individual handbooks below.
