How does the regime actually reconcile the self-proclaimed principles of meritocracy in the presence of a Bumiputra policy that ensures the need for a minority to be elected, even if it were to come at the expense of ability?

Moreover, if it needs any reminder, independent Singapore's first elected opposition MP hails from an ethnic minority race. Hence, why the need to run fraudulent schemes under the guise of a GRC to advance the interests of minorities when historical evidence has already attested to the fact that minorities can - and should - succeed if he had the ability?

The results of the GE show that the political change initiated by the PAP to include more opposition has seen some form of success. Back in 2009, Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong proposed that each Parliament will have at least nine opposition members and nine Nominated Members of Parliament (NMPs), so that there will be at least 18 Members of Parliament (MPs) who are not from the ruling party. In addition, he proposed that there will be fewer six-member GRCs and a range of smaller GRCs in the next election, while the number of Single Member Constituencies will be increased to 12 from 9.

Even though the political situation is more favourable to the opposition as compared to the previous few General Elections, the opposition has put up a rather disappointing performance by winning only 6 of the seats.

"This shows that the PAP still has the highest number of talents of all political parties in Singapore. The opposition parties are still not up to mark," proclaimed newly elected MP Dr *** *****

I think you've hit the nail on the head, eagle. After all they were so arrogant to dub the opposition team that contested in the PM's GRC as "suicide team", snickering that they would lose by such a significant margin that they will forfeit their deposit. The bleedy PM is lucky he is still around to collect his $m pay cheque!

If PM LHL is sincere about having true representative voice in Parliament that allow ordinary Singaporean views to be effectively voiced and heard - it is not good enough to tweak the election system to allow only 9 Members from the Alternative Political Parties and 9 NMPs from Singapore Society to enter Parliament.

The entire Singapore political format crafted by LKY has to be revamped - as it was designed to perpetuate the interests of only the PAP.

Revisions should be made to lift restrictions and legislations passed to prevent Singaporeans giving any large financial contributions to political parties.

The PAP Government should reassess their "political pettiness" in taking punitive administrative reprisal actions against businesses and private individuals making any large financial contribution to the other Political Parties and not to the PAP.

The PAP Government should show more political maturity and relax on their paranoia in placing strict controls on the print and broadcast medias giving any positive publicity to Alternative Political Parties.

It was sheer arrogance for LKY to believe that the Government is not answerable to newspapers and will not be subjected to the scrutiny of the Press, when the press is used by LKY's Government to be the PAP watchdog over Singaporeans.

The PAP leadership should separate party politics from the Government body, and depoliticize the Civil Service, the Police Force, and the SAF.

The PAP should allow professionals to run these critical National Institutions as non-political supporting bodies to any incoming Government formed by any Political Party.

If MM LKY had built Singapore to what it is today, PM LHL should leave a longer lasting political stability by dismantling the deep penetration of PAP Political Appointees holding executive powers in the various Government-linked Companies - that will pose conflicts of interests to the Government formed by any Political Party other then the PAP.

If PM LHL is sincere about changing the Rules of Politics in Singapore, he should go deeper and make the necessary change to inject strength and fresh quality into the present status quo, where the present air is already stale from 52 years of monotonous rule by the PAP that had purposefully stifled all other voices.

This is just a sop thrown at us to make us think they are willing to listen to the people but when in actual fact, we know for ourselves whether they are really listening.

The truth is they still hold the majority of power and when people say "Mee Siam got hum" means got hum (DO NOT ARGUE WITH HIM)

interesting to how the opposition MP would be "selected" into the parliament if they do not have the votes of the people?

will this add to the current seats taken by the opposition so that there would be over 10 opposition members in the parliament?

PAP are smart, they are using the happy tactics to treat you peoples, by giving some sweets to you all people about 9 opposition MPs in the parliament, you all think for sure 9 ar??? Mai siao lah, be more clever, my Uncle Andrew taught me alots about PAP tricks.

By proclaiming 9 oppositon MPs, LHL knows that the ground is not happy about the lost of investment and the cost of living still high, therefore by saying something to cool down the mass will be very good, on the other hand, he knows that everyone of us will think that oppositions are coming in and therefore dun mind vote PAP, but in the end. PAP got most of the seat, and he will said, well, MP are voted in, I was thinking of about 9 opposition will be coming, but too bad the public still like PAP MPs.

Most part of last quarter century I wan't allowed to vote, but I won't say that people were tricked.

The question is what you do when you see? Offer of 9 opposition MPs seats is hardly anything sweet to the common citizens, because ultimately the PAP still running the show the way they want it, pay themselves the way they see fit, you still won't get chance to vote when there is a walkover in your constituency.

I agree that century eggs go well with porridge, sweets are only for kids.

I am more interested to know how many people here actually take up a position and join an opposition party!
