A report released this month by the Department of Statistics showed 39,935 babies were born in 2008, well short of the 60,000 births the country needs each year.

This is a very big problem. It is either Singaporean produce more babies, or else, has to depend on immigrants to fill up the 60% shortage in human population.

strangely, the better the 'general' conditions of a country, the lower the birth rate seems to be. look at the countries with high birth rates. the 'general conditions' of those countries are really fantastic...???????

That has always been the trend, yet people still insists that it's the government's fault.

Even without the stop at 2 policy, all we get is a bigger population than now. The birth replacement rate would still be at the same dismal rate.

The end result would be worse without the policy in fact.Considering then we would have a much bigger aging baby boomer population, with future generations having to fork out more to support them.

Singapore's GIC may invest in more banks

The Government of Singapore Investment Corp may invest in more banks in Europe and the United States if it gets the chance, adding to its stakes in beleaguered bank UBS and Citigroup, its chairman told Bloomberg TV.

"If there are other banks of the quality of the two that we bought into, with the promise and the capabilities and inherent capabilities to recover, we have got the liquidity to meet it, to make such an investment," Lee, 84, said in a Bloomberg Television interview late yesterday. "We will not rule it out."

"We are buying something that we intend to keep for the next two to three decades and grow with them", he said, adding that GIC was a long-term investor.

There's this paper titled: The Functional Prerequisites of a Society.

A main point in the paper is that we need 'new' people to replace those who will eventually die in order for a society to NOT become extinct. These 'new' people can be gotten either by reproduction, or the 'recruiting' of 'new' members.

if no 60000 babies a year (or whatever the numbers) to maintain a certain number of singaporeans in singapore, you'll have to get that number from immigrants

60,000 is the estimate shortage, if we can make it to 80,000 or more the merrier. Currently is only 30,000 offsprings, and some are belong to foreigners who become singapore citizens, in comparing to the death which is figure at 45,000 per years, we are going to lose 15,000 peoples per year. And in the long term, with gradual reduction in birthrates and higher death rate due to old ages, we are history.
