Music Teachers

Introduction to the Role

Marlborough College Malaysia requires Instrumental Music Teachers to work within its Music Department and assist pupils in their development, both in groups and on an individual basis. Using a range of interpersonal skills to build positive relationships with pupils, the individuals will be required to utilise knowledge of learning strategies and values of the College to contribute to progress made by pupils in their musical development. The College comprises an International pupil body with currently 470 pupils aged 4 to 12 years (both boys and girls) in its Preparatory School, and approximately 340 pupils in the Senior School aged 13 to 18 years. Some 380 instrumental lessons are delivered each week. The College also has a number of instrumental and vocal ensembles including a College Orchestra and a Prep School Orchestra, and numerous choirs in both the Senior School and Prep School. There are several Chamber ensembles and Rock Bands, and the department is equipped with a purpose built 24 track Recording Studio which runs iMacs and Logic Pro X.

We are currently advertising for the following contract for service positions:

1. Cello/Strings specialist, able to teach to diploma level.
Applicants should be an active professional in their field and will be able to be an inspiration to children and an active member of a busy and thriving department. The ability to accompany on the piano is desirable, although not a necessity.

2. A piano teacher, able to teach to diploma level.
Applicants should be an active professional in their field and will be able to be an inspiration to children and an active member of a busy and thriving department. The ability to sight read and accompany difficult repertoire at short notice is desirable.

3. A singing specialist with expertise in primary and/or musical theatre. Applicants should be an active professional in their field and will be able to be an inspiration to children and an active member of a busy and thriving department. The ability to accompany on the piano is desirable, although not a necessity.

Hours of Work

The for service contracts are hourly paid (currently RM120/hour) and there are currently five eight hour days of teaching per week, and one optional five hour day of teaching on Saturdays. Lessons take place during term-time only (30 weeks per year). Hours are dictated by pupil uptake on any specific instrument. It is essential that applicants are able to offer the commitment that the College requires for their pupils, and be available for teaching flexibly between the hours of 7.30am to 6pm.

Taking a step forward in realising its globalisation efforts, the Management Development Institute of Singapore (MDIS) inked a landmark deal with [email protected] Sdn Bhd, making it the first private tertiary institution in Singapore to make its foray into Malaysia. This is MDIS’ second overseas campus – the first being in Tashkent, Uzbekistan – and also marks the first major deal made by a Singaporean group in Iskandar’s special economic zone.

Held in September 2013, the MDIS Malaysia Campus Groundbreaking Ceremony was officiated by YAB Tan Sri Dato’ Hj. Muhyiddin bin Hj. Mohd Yassin, Deputy Prime Minister of Malaysia and Minister of Education. The project costs RM300 million and will be carried out in three phases: the first, to be completed by 2015, will allow the campus to open its doors to some 2,000 students, but the goal is to allow the campus to cater to over 10,000 students upon the completion of its third phase in 2023. In the meantime, the City Campus in Johor Bahru City Square will be in full operation.

Once fully operational, MDIS Malaysia will be equipped with state-of-the-art infrastructure such as campus-wide WiFi connectivity, fully-equipped computer laboratories, and dedicated lecture theatres. In accordance with the institution’s green initiative, the campus will also dedicate to approximately 40 percent of its 30.07 acres of land to incorporating eco- and disability-friendly features such as solar panels, rainwater collection tanks and glare shields to minimise water and electrical usage.

MDIS Malaysia will offer courses in Business, Tourism & Hospitality, Mass Communication, Information Technology, and Digital Media. All of these courses have already received the Malaysian Qualifications Agency’s (MQA) approval and relevant course licences.

With the addition of MDIS Malaysia, students from the MDIS campuses in Tashkent and Singapore will have the opportunity of a transnational education: something which, with the increasing globalisation of economies worldwide, will only become more valuable as time goes by.

University of Southampton Malaysia Campus freezes UG tuition fees for Malaysian students in 2016

In response to Malaysia’s current economic climate, the University of Southampton Malaysia Campus has announced that it will freeze its annual undergraduate tuition fees for Malaysian students this academic year (2016/17).

‘’Undergraduate students attending Southampton will pay the same tuition fees as last year’s under the freeze approved by the University. In addition, students who have shown excellent performance in both academic and personal aspects will be provided with scholarships that are incomparable with other private institutions in Malaysia,’’ said Prof. John McBride, CEO of University of Southampton Malaysia Campus.

The University will also boost its scholarship programmes for both foundation and undergraduate students. With up to 100 per cent scholarships available, top performing students at the Malaysia Campus could gain a world-class engineering programme at a fraction of the cost of the same degree in the UK.

Last year, 4th year Mechanical Engineering students Jeremy Fong, Jei See Tai and Yong Hau Kit as well as 3rd year Electrical and Electronic Engineering students Wen Yee Tay, Yiqian Hui and Aaron Pang – were honoured with the Lloyd’s Register scholarships. This award covers each scholar’s tuition fees for the next academic year for their study in the UK campus.
