What factors will you considered when buying Evo or WRX STi

This question may has been asked many times. but just like to know what will you considered when buying such a performance car since with the price, it has already reach close to the much sought after German car of smaller capacities.

1. Insurance
2. Fuel Consumption (average use without hard driving)
3. Comfort
4. Resale Value (say after using it for 3 - 4 years)
5. High OMV

Of course, if your answer is passion for Evo/STi and nothing else, the above are negligible and so this question is not applicable for you Wink

Hmm..guess if u are considering such a car, you would obviously know about the higher insurance and high FC. ( heard from a friend with an EVO8 that whether or no he drives hard, does not really make a BIG difference to FC )

Comfort would be not bad but of course compare to heavy cars like camry and cefiros, the rally cars will be slightly louder and more uncomfortable? Very Happy

Resale value is a drastic drop as pple who drive these kind of car would prob have given it a good drive before deciding to sell. I mean who are we to kid? imagine the car dealer thell you that these fierce machine is driven by an old lady that does shopping once a week..would u believe? Rolling Eyes

Jiayong, let me clarify something...

Driving the E8 hard makes a HUGE difference in terms of fuel consumption. If your friend claims that his FC remains the same, his driving style is definitely on the hard revving sort. If you keep it below 3,000rpm, which is kinda nuts (but lets say you do), and you run stock boost, you will probably run 400-450km on the 55 litre tank.

My suggestion: check with your insurance company. The amount is NOT going to be pleasant if you are young and / or you dun have NCDs.

i was also considering the evo 8 MR or the Sti... although the E8 is slightly faster but.. comfort wise?? and FC?? i already have a cefiro... but my dad usually drives it.. or shld i say its his car... and planning to get 1...

i was planning a Sti but wat is the performance wise difference??

same same... very much like to get one for myself but the price is quite scary (me not printing money one if not hack care already Very Happy ).

The new E8 MR costs near to 155K for PI and C&C (read from somewhere) is going to sell around 160K. The STi (price from this forum) is 136.5K and is much cheaper comparing to the ones from PI since it could cost near to 145K. However the specifications are different. But i think in normal driving here, it will not make much of a different.

Using a 10 years depreciation calculation and forget about getting back the scrap value for a MR (155/10) = 15.5K. If you sell it after 3 years drive (15.5 x 3) = 46.5k and this is probably the amount you spent on everything. Wow.. that is a big 'damage' in saving, isn't it?

Be warned, that I am biased.. towards which side you will soon find out.

Performance wise, unless you get the STi Spec C, the E8 is going to outgun the STi. But its about 0-something secs... not much difference. The E8's technology (according to a PI and others) is more superior, i.e. if you manage to whip the tail out for an E8, its quite a feat. Front-mounted intercooler is definitely a better way to cool the turbo engine (look at the WRC WRX, its front mounted). According to a pretty famous workshop, the evos are easier to mod compared to the WRX (this can be disputed). The MR has a superior AYC plus lighter components and is definitely going to be a great drive.

Insurance, FC and other necessities (i.e. brake pads, tires, clutch, etc) are going to cost.

i heard that the Sti has a more healthy power/weight ratio?

seems that Evo too much power for its weight? should be fine on straights...but corners...im not sure.

Anyway..with all the electronics like AYC and stuff in the Evo, it will need less skill to drive it well. So if u want to hone your skills, get the Sti?

I believe both do not make much difference in term of performance... anyway, you plan to buy from PI or Motorimage/C&C?

Not sure will the STi faced lifted soon since now the MR is released. Months before, there was a STi V-Limited (555 units worldwide production) but not sure anyone in SG bought a unit.

owning a car and/or racing actual cars is even more ex ah. how much u spend on your car already? def more than wad i spent on karts. u spent a lot more but learnt less. so dun say karting is expensive as hell because i can't imagine how u can spend so much on your tofu car and think its cheap considered to my karting. that time u were telling us about how much u spent right? i hear also scared. so i'd rather stick to go karting which is much cheaper.

Jiayong, sorry, am not too sure about the weight of the STi. All I know is that the version at Borneo Motors is the Euro version which pumps out 260bhp. Saw a potential Spec C (280bhp) yesterday at Conrad hotel... now thats what the Evo 8 MR is going up against. Anyway, this is the first time that i heard having higher power/weight ratio is not ideal!!! I know of people making their E8s go on a lean diet to improve the ratio! No matter what car, FC will vary depending on your driving style.

Think if you want to improve your driving, learn from the experts by going for defensive driving courses. Sliding the car around is no big deal - its when you pushed the car over the limit... how you counter such situations is where such courses will help. E8 is a very clever car with immense potential. To me Wink , the E8 is definitely has better "wow" factor compared to STi. Eg, STi will not get as much looks as you are driving out of Zouk... hahaha... shallow me... Mr. Green

A correction... Motorimage is the official distributor for Subaru not Borneo Motor Wink Actually how can you tell from a normal STi to a SpecC Sti?

Autocar, Asean edition, Nov 2003, pg 65, did a Evo VIII FQ300 vs Spec C in a 'Britain best handling car' shootout. The Spec C edged the Evo out.

I think Spec C is lighter than the STi because of the material use. Ride more harsh, other than that i am interested to know too! Laughing

Heng and babypic - I believe that I read an article of the SpecC vs the FQ330. Could be the one that baby was refering to - not sure. But really one should compare lightweights with lightweights - MR vs SpecC.

To me, I only know that the SpecC has the air vent on the roof - I know that can be fixed on, thats why I said "potential".

Just found out that the kerb weight of the STi is 1450kg, versus the E8's 1410kg (wonder if this includes weight of sunroof,,, Question ) with the E8 pushing out 280hp vs the STi 265bhp... ah, you guys and pretty ladies are smart enuff to do the calculations. Anyway, its minimal that we are talking... but I have friends who will swear that every bhp counts!!! Razz
