Chee Soon Juan launched a new book.Among the chapters:

The book includes a chapter written by Professor of Southeast Asian Studies, Terence Harper, from Cambridge University.

1.Does Terence Harper carring the title

''Professor of Southeast Asian Studies''?

Or is he the Professor in Southeast Asian Studies (Center)?

There is no such center in Cambridge.

Only ''CENTRE OF SOUTH ASIAN STUDIES''

Further,there is no such person currently in the staff list.

There is only one person carrying the title'' Professor'',

ie Professor C.A. Bayly --- Director of the Center.

U may say ha Terence Harper just left.

If so,he has not published any

Occasional Paper

since 2002.

Also,Cambridge U libraries provide

no book/publication from this Terence Harper.

Research Interests

Modern Southeast Asian history and World history.

Current undergraduate Teaching

Tim Harper lectures for the Part I papers 'The Expansion of Europe from 1500 to the First World War' and 'The West and the "Third World" from 1918', for which he acts as convenor. He also contributes to the Themes and Sources option, 'Migrants; emigration and immigration within and without Europe, the New World, Asia and the Antipodes from the fourth to the twentieth century' and to Faculty classes on historiography.

He currently teaches a Part II document-based special subject: 'T.E. Lawrence and Gertrude Bell: Britain and the Arabs, 1914-22'.

Areas of Research supervision

Dr Harper has supervised PhD theses on a range of topics on modern Southeast Asian history, the region’s connections with the wider world and other areas of imperial history. Examples of Ph.D. theses on Southeast Asia are: European travel and knowledge in early modern Southeast Asia; nature, Islam and colonial rule in Trengganu; globalization and religious revival in the Indian Ocean Rim in the late nineteenth century and early twentieth centuries; United States relations with Singapore in the 1950s; modernity, popular culture and urban life in colonial Singapore; South Vietnamese intellectual history, and women’s movements in Malaysia. More widely, other projects supervised have included opium consumption in Qing China; the political economy of the rubber trade in the British Empire; cathedrals and urbanism in the colonial Indian Ocean; civilian internees in Southeast Asia, 1941-45; cosmopolitanism and port city elites in Asia; Pan-Islamism and the British empire, and counter-insurgency during the Palestine mandate.

Dr Harper supervises students for the M.Phil in Historical Studies.

Tim Harper acts as Secretary to the Research Committee of the Association of Southeast Asian Scholars in the UK (ASEASUK).

With Dr Sunil Amrith, he is co-convenor of panel for the SSRC Conference on ‘Inter-Asian Connections’ in Dubai in February 2008.

First,he is just a Reader.Secondly,has Cambridge awarded

this title to him?

OMG!! In complete plain English language,Doctor is not equivalent to Professor,

so does Reader .

In the academic hierarchy in the United Kingdom and some universities in Australia and New Zealand, reader is the rank between senior lecturer (or principal lecturer in the New Universities) and professor. The title of Reader is given in recognition of research and scholarship.

In academic circle,like in SAF,there is strict rule of title,
