Hi sgf!
I am sure all of you have notice this before :
The Chinese subtitles shown are in the
more cryptic or difficult Traditional Chinese characters.
The Chinese language Singaporeans learn is using Simplified
Chinese characters.
In my humble opinion, basically, either due to political or
other reasons, only Taiwan uses and learn the
Traditional Chinese characters.
TV programs broadcasted in Singapore having Chinese
subtitles are using Traditional Chinese characters.
Whatever the reason may be, Simplified Chinese characters should
be used for broadcasting in Singapore.
Chinese subtitles :
1. Can help educate those who are interested to learn more about
Chinese for either business or social reasons.
2. Why show Traditional Chinese characters when the Chinese
language here is taught , spoken and written in Simplified
Chinese ?
3. Would the more cryptic and elaborate Traditional
Chinese characters deter more from using the subtitles as well as
deter people from learning Chinese ?
4. If indeed, Simplified Chinese is better and more suitable for
Singapore viewers, why is Traditional Chinese still used? Why
occupy the screen with characters that people have trouble reading
or avoid reading?
As said, whatever might be the reason, can Mediacorp or Cable
service providers do something about this situation that has
existed since the Dinosaurs (movie) was broadcasted? (pun
intended)
Else, I suggest remove Traditional Chinese characters or replace
it with French Subtitles so that people can learn another
language and not waste the space occupied by Chinese subtitle?
