Photoshop: Masking and colouring

I added the sky's colour by masking the non-sky. Seems to be very tedious. Any other ideas?

For the other colours, I just painted with the paint brush. Seems to be very slow. Any other time efficient methods?

No. The non-sky was masked.

Then the sky was gradiented. Yah.

I'm trying to ask if there's another way beside the way I'm using now.

orhhh okok i gotcha..

wat kind of mask u use?

if the pic is penciled, then scanned, u could just use the lasso to select all the non-sky and mask it out using an alpha channel.

think either way is the same lar.. as in time-wise.. Wink

or you could try this..

after u scan it, select ALL the white parts with the magic wand and delete it, so white becomes transparent. if your background layer is locked after scanning then dup the later and discard the original.

then put the gradient fill behind this layer and fill up the rest with paint brush? dunno if u know wat i'm trying to get at here.. Rolling Eyes Twisted Evil

Maybe I should try that. 'cause now I'm just using the paintbrush to mask.

There's a lot of background to colour, so trying to find some way around...

Hmm.. I don't think the magic wand is going to work as I don't draw pictures that are closed, meaning lines that are linked together.

So in that circumstances, I will end up selecting everything that's white.

i would put the sky on a seperate layer
and use the lasso tool to cut out the sky.

i dun generally like masking, tedious compared to lasso.
unless i'm trying to do some toning blah blah thingy, if not i lasso and save them as new alpha channels.

that's exactly wat i meant.. cut out everything except ur pencil marks.

put the layer of the pencil marks ABOVE all other layers, and below that u can start colouring watever on seperate layers, the gradient layers being the lowest layers of course.

in this way u won't be colouring over the pencil marks, which is wat u don't want rite?
