when u eat non-halal food, by right muslims are not allowed to sit at the same table.

do refer to the link above. this is due to concerns over cross contamination and the smell of pork.

that is why i bring up the question. which is more important to you, eating pork, and being able to sit with ur muslim friends.

fortunately they now have all halal food courts like banquet.

Well I think having a choice is important.

In a place which has halal and non-halal food, I can choose to eat halal food with my muslim friends.

If non-halal food is banned, that choice is taken away from me.

I do think it's understandable why people want to boycott halal only restaurants. They are afraid that their ability to choose non-halal food will be taken away from them.

it's the lack of choice.... as you say, there is give and take among friends...

but when u take away the choice, then it is basically forcing the other party's point of view upon yourself.... and nobody likes that... hence, the uproar...

I thought the issue here is that our Muslim friends DO have objections due to the possibility of cross contamination and smell. So there is a problem sharing a table with them if we are eating pork.

But anyway, saying that Muslims have to objections to us eating non-Halal food in front of them, and saying that out of consideration we don't eat non-Halal food in front of them, is contradictory. Eating non-Halal food in front of a Muslim becomes a consideration only because there are objections.

What so bad about having just Halal food in the canteen is that it takes away choice. It takes the values of one community of people and imposes it on another.

I m fine with eating hala food or paying extra for hala certificated food.

In fact, most non muslim in Singapore will be fine with that as we are more and less used to it.

You may be fine with eating halal food or paying more for halal food. Others may not.

Let's say if a significant minority of Singaporeans become vegetarian, and are afraid of cross-contamination with meat as well as cannot tolerate the smell of meat, should we then ban meat?

I also fail to see how discussing an issue is divisive, unless your opinion is all differences in opinion are, by definition, divisive.

I would. I dont really care what you eat. I don't like it myself when friends have to restrict their diet just because they have to be thoughtful of me, thus I choose to only go eat out with friends sometimes.

good for you, a lot of people won't .... it's not really the issue of eating pork, I won't die if I don't eat pork (hmmm ... maybe ...) .... but I feel that the accomodation has to be both ways ... what is wrong with sitting down together as a group and you eat what you will, I eat what I like ? ... it's often not the case ... as if even sharing a table with pork eaters will defile them .... it creates a sort of us-vs-them atmosphere you know ...

the funny thing is, many of my muslim friends of other extractions overseas, pakistanis and arabs for example, have no qualms about their choice of eating venues and diets at all, they'd happily eat at any resturants or fastfood joints with you, so long as they themselves don't eat pork, they don't mind me scuffling down a rack of ribs at the same table, at the same resturant ....

And shouldn't be respect be 2 way? i respect your right to have halal food and you respect my right to have pork....

in case u are wondering, i do go to banquet food court... i have no problems with that... but i have a choice in this case to go to a halal food court or a non-halal one... for the case of the school, the choice is taken away.. it's just that simple.. no religious connotations at all...

I for one do not appreciate having my diet dictated by another person's religious beliefs.

But beef is a seasonal prohibition. Hindus do not eat beef but on some days they can. All my hindu friends eat beef.

Unlike pork which is not supposed to be consumed at all times.

I think its immaterial to argue about eating beef and whether it is seasonal or not.

I'm a non-muslim and i know that my religion does not allow me to eat beef.

But it is not that strict. We can still eat at the same food courts as people who eat beef.

However, the Muslims cant as they are much stricter with rgds to this laws. That is why i agree with the author. I don;t see the harm of doing away with certain items that are not halal. Which is more important to u? Friendship or your plate of charsiew?

To begin with, that's "friendship with conditions". The condition being, I can't eat pork, so you aren't allowed to as well.

I'm all for religious freedom, but freedom cuts both ways. Just as you are allowed to practice what you believe in, I should be allowed to live as I deem fit too, as long as it doesn't infringe on someone else's rights.

The simple example of Burger King's Turkey bacon is a great example of infringing on someone's rights.

I don't believe any one religious group or another should have that right to impose their religious restrictions on everyone else like that.

Some people are vegetarian. Does that mean all meat products should be replaced with vegi substitues?

I believe Muslims are also allowed to eat in the same food court as people who eat pork.

Let me be clear now, I am 100% against boycotting Halal foodcourts. I'm not even against Islam in any way or form.

I just do not see why if other religious groups can be, and has to be, tolerant and not impose their beef/all meat products/etc restrictions on everyone else, the Muslim religion is allowed to impose their restrictions on the rest of us like this.

really, respect and tolerance is a two way street ... but just as you do not like it if someone else tries to impose their restrictions on you, that someone wouldn't like it either when you impose yours, right ? ... TS should try to see things from other people's point of view as well, his reasoning is too one way ......

if we try to accomodate everybody, we should make all school canteens and food courts solely vegetarian then, neh ? that way everybody can eat anything, together ! ...

Halai food for muslims. non Halai for non muslims.

But non muslims are also okay with Halai food.

There should be flexible choices and not rigid and restrictive practices.

Impose Halai food on muslims and non muslims is a rigid regulation and is not right.

It should be disapproved, not approve.
