The wife of the CEO of Venture Corp, who was charged under
Section 323 for slapping an SIA stewardess, has been acquitted with
just a warning. She had earlier settled a civil case with the
stewardess for an undisclosed amount. Nevertheless, the criminal
case against her should not have been dropped just because of
that.
There is no reason why the Public Prosecutor
should withdraw the case against her and it is every bit
AGAINST the public interest to drop the charge. This sends a
very wrong signal to Singaporeans: that you can assault whoever you
please, as long as you have money. The decision to drop this case
is tantamount to giving tacit assent for anyone to pay for the
right to beat people up.
Will the new Justice minister make clear his position on this
matter and discipline the errant DPP? We have all heard about how
LHL slapped Dhanabalan....did they settle for an undisclosed sum
too?
