I didn't mean to imply that religions are simplistic. I said they provide simple answers to complex questions.

Before computers were invented that could run mathematical simulations to provide empiric proof that co-operating sub-programs were more viable then selfish subprograms in the long run, Religion had already said "love thy neighbor".

Religion serves a purpose.

Contrast this to "why is the sky blue? Because God made it that way". Or "why can't we get along? Because they are infidels, blasphemers, satanic."

Simple answers don't always work.

Indeed simple answers don't always work but why blame religion when simple people resort to violence to solve their problem of cowards lobbing bombs into their villages and killing their children? Why not instead blame the simplicity of such people who cannot understand the complex geopolitical environment which calls for their deaths or maybe the complex thinking problem makers who initiated these demonic complex calculations? Religious faith is usually a fluttering ephemeral thing in the hearts and minds of people. To attribute to it the capability to generate long complex stratagems of war is quite a thing to claim. Complex thinkers should know better.

To reiterate my view (I know I cannot change yours because you are culturally indoctrinated to feel yours in superior, but try to deconstruct), religion, like any other think can be complex or simplistic, depending on the depth of understanding and scope of analysis of the human practisioner. The difference between scientific understanding and religious faith, is that the former requires as a primary criteria the capability and utilization of complex thought. However, the success of that process too is limited by available correct data. Religious faith on the other hand is for all men, great and small, a salve to the hearts of the weary and a fire in the hands of the righteous. This is no bad thing and is much better than self serving pretensions.

There is no conflict between science and enlightened religion for they both serve as civilizing forces. To have both in a man (or woman) is ideal, for one gives check on the other. To have neither is a tragedy and to have only one is to lack civilization in its truest sense.

Does the Qur'an really contain dozens of verses commanding violence?

Take the comment in Sura 4:89 about Non-Muslims:

"They long that ye should disbelieve even as they disbelieve, that ye may be upon a level (with them). So choose not friends from them till they forsake their homes in the way of Allah; if they turn back (to enmity) then take them and kill them wherever ye find them, and choose no friend nor helper from among them"

And others

Sura 3:151

"Soon shall We cast terror into the hearts of the Unbelievers, for that they joined companions with Allah, for which He had sent no authority"

Sura 8:12

"I will cast terror into the hearts of those who disbelieve. Therefore strike off their heads and strike off every fingertip of them"

Take the comment in Sura 2:216 about fighting

"Fighting is prescribed for you, and ye dislike it. But it is possible that ye dislike a thing which is good for you, and that ye love a thing which is bad for you. But Allah knoweth, and ye know not."

Sura 9:73

"O Prophet! strive hard against the unbelievers and the hypocrites and be unyielding to them; and their abode is hell, and evil is the destination."

But where they get their motivation for terror?

Where else but the Quran?

The Quran contains dozens of verses that call Muslims to war with nonbelievers.

Some are quite graphic, with commands to chop off heads and fingers, and kill the infidels wherever they may be hiding.

Muslims who do not join the fight are called 'hypocrites' and warned that Allah will send them to Hell if they do not join the slaughter.

These verses are mostly open-ended, meaning that they are not embedded within historical context (as are nearly all of the Old Testament verses of violence).

They are part of the eternal, unchanging word of Allah, and just as relevant or subjective as anything else in the Qur'an.

People, remember that even though there are many terror groups that exist with different names

99% have one thing in common

To establish Islamic rule on the face of the earth!

Dear Frak,

I don't disagree with you. When i read what you wrote, I am struck by the similarities in how we both view this matter, albeit from different perspectives.

Our views are similar enough that we strike chords in each other and different enough to warrant a discussion.
