The first duty of a leader is service, to his people with dedication, quality and excellence.

If up to now this basic duty is still very cloudy in his mind and not being understood or followed, with suing or fixing of oppositions and slamming of people who give negative feedbacks or criticisms of his policies and denying problems all the time with all kinds of propaganda calling them ranters, arm-chair critics, or spin doctors then he is not qualified to give lesson on morality or graciousness.

Why? Because his people will simply copy his style of slamming critics and running down people who disagree with them or treating their fellow citizens or subordinates with disdain, rudeness and irrationality just like what he has been doing all thees past 40 plus years.

How could we ever build a gracious society under this type of leadership?

If a good leader leads from the back, why is there a need to have leading salary?

If a good leader is to guide and take care of his/her followers, why are they afraid of citizens developing a 'crutch' mentality by not providing more welfare? And the burning question, if they are afraid of citizens developing a 'crutch' mentality, why is there so much need for 1) CPF, and 2) Annuity?

When i read the article, i thought about aunties with more than 8 items on NTUC's express lane. I thought about drivers stepping on the accelerator when we signal our intention to shift lanes. I thought about public transport commuters turning a blind eye to the pregnant woman and the elderly. That is a problem, reckoned i concurred with LKY. Was discussing with a pal and we came to a conclusion that family values play a part. If your parents are ungracious etc, you have a good chance of being ungracious as well. It doesn't matter what we think anyway. What struck us most was not what LKY said but the comments that ensued on asiaone's website and perhaps the one here.

Apparently people started pushing the blame on the government and LKY instead of reflecting on the ungraceful habits we have. Was just telling my pal:"Mate, i think we have a serious issue in Singapore in that we are farking stupid. So stupid to the point that we actually blame the government for our habits. We blame the government when we can't get a desired job even though we are graduates etc". Seriously, you are who you are and there is no one to blame but yourself.

frankly i dont quite concurred what u had said. there is nothing wrong when u blame the govt for not getting a desire job becoz the govt has fail to create jobs in the relevant sector for u. that what very top minister of ruling party should do for the citizen of every country. i dont think it is ridiculous to expect everyone from singapore to be gracious. why not let one be themselves instead of expecting to be someone they are not. eg. i encourage those who give up their seats to others but i dont it is necessary to criticise those who do not. Do you ever stand up and clap your hands when u or your friends see someone who give up their seats to the elderly or pregnant women. if not, you are not contributing to the causes of graciousness of opening appreciating someone who did a noble act.

robert teh isnt just blaming PAP for nothing. they way LKY marginalise the opposition is for all to see. that is something definitely not gracious isnt it?

Hmmm...we all know pretty well the situation here. Sad to say, even I am a product of the system here, inculcated with the notion that we all have to drive ourselves to the ground, to study hard and to make ourselves economically viable as we are all cogs in the Sillypore economic wheel(old man said so himself many years ago). Now you know what he thinks of you and me huh, just cogs in the wheel...nothing more....no wonder there is no soul or graciousness here(old man said so himself just a few days ago)....wonder who's fault is it? hmmmmm kekekekeke, yup I agree its just like father like son.....Sillypore is a mirror image of you know who.....so all the success and flaws like economic greed, ungraciousness naturally comes from him.....

So let us continue being No.1 and do what we do best, earn more money for bigger cars and condos while the rest of us including myself jump ship to go to far more gracious countries

Agreed we as singaporeans are to blame for such behaviour but i believe society and meybe the govt should shoulder some blame.

How so u ask? Singapore is a very competitive country, there are people who work very hard and earn little. We work long hours as well. It is different from Oz "mate" whereby u can have a comfortable life doing part time work and ask the capitalist "the hell do u work so hard for? do u rly need so much $?" The wage system in Oz protects low income earners by taxing the high income earners. Therefore allowing Ozzies to follow their heart. I would have luved to be a blue collar worker under the sun using my hands and enjoying laughs and a beer with a colleague whilst i lay bricks. Try that in Singapore "mate" and try that in Ozzieland. I would be working overtime for pay that could hardly afford beer which would be a luxury. Chicks would be like eeeww bricklayer? Can u even afford yerself? much less a family Wink . Ozzieland? tradesman? good money aye buddy? *pat on the back Laughing

This inbreeds a selfish nature within the low income earners in SG. Tired after work i see a pregnant woman in the MRT..... give up my seat? Woman i pity you but tough luck i'm not doing too well myself..... let the rich give up their seat..... life hasnt been treating me well.

But i'm not doing too bad some say? $2k+ average stuff mah aiyo....dun say until so chiam..... try buying a small car and a mortgage Twisted Evil after that lets see what u can save... capital appreciation? on a 99 year lease? 60k for a decent small car that you have to scrap after what 10 years?

The big tickets in life ie car and house are cheaper in Oz as compared to Sg dude. Why dont you try spending the same amount of $ for a house in Oz for a "house" in Sg? Lets see how much harder you have to work for the same "luxury".
