SINGAPORE : Singapore has urged Myanmar authorities to admit UN Special Envoy Ibrahim Gambari into the country and grant him full access to all players there.

The Foreign Affairs Ministry says Singapore welcomes the decision of UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon to send Mr Gambari to Myanmar.

In a statement, MFA says Singapore fully supports any initiative by the UN which would help defuse the situation.

It adds that a peaceful resolution to the situation in Myanmar will require the cooperation and involvement of all parties, including the military.

MFA says the UN offers the best hope for a peaceful resolution of the situation.

And it calls on the Myanmar authorities to take advantage of Mr Gambari's planned visit to defuse the situation.

The situation in Myanmar affects all ASEAN countries.

And Singapore hopes that Myanmar authorities and all other parties in the country will appreciate the broader implications of their actions on the region and act accordingly.

The MFA statement adds that Singapore is deeply troubled and concerned by reports that the demonstrations in Yangon have been suppressed by force.

And it urges Myanmar authorities to exercise utmost restraint.

Singapore's Foreign Affairs Minister George Yeo, who is currently in New York for the UN General Assembly session, has applauded the decision by UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon to send Mr Gambari on this mission.

He urged all parties in Myanmar to work towards national reconciliation.

Mr Yeo had spoken to Mr Gambari in New York and assured him of Singapore's full support.

MFA adds that the UN Security Council intends to conduct consultations on the situation in Myanmar.

In his capacity as the current Chairman of the ASEAN Standing Committee, Mr Yeo is currently consulting with Foreign Minister Hassan Wirajuda of Indonesia, which is now a non-permanent member of the UN Security Council, and other ASEAN members.

Meanwhile, Singapore's Foreign Ministry has advised Singaporeans planning to travel to Myanmar to closely monitor media reports before travelling there.

Singaporeans travelling to the country are advised to register with the MFA on its website.

This will allow MFA and the Singapore Embassy in Yangon to contact Singaporeans who are there and render assistance, if necessary.

MFA and the embassy in Yangon are monitoring the situation closely.

Singaporeans already in Myanmar are advised to closely monitor media reports on the situation.

MFA says they should take the necessary precautions for their personal safety, including remaining in a safe location and avoiding areas where there may be trouble.

Meanwhile, Myanmar nationals in Singapore have been keeping up to date with developments back home through whatever means they can.

Most have been glued to the latest news on Channel NewsAsia while others gather to monitor blogs from Myanmar and get the latest updates from each other.

Flights from Yangon to Singapore have been packed over the past few weeks while demand for seats to the Myanmar city is less popular, according to travel agents.

"I can't do anything when I go home. The best thing is to just stay here. If anything, I will call my family to come here," says one Myanmar national who is in Singapore. - CNA/ls/de

Investments wise..we cannot entirely discount the fact that engagement does improve the situation a bit, especially in Mandalay and Sittwe.

What is needed is a twin-pronged approach by the international community. Invest in the people and insist on certain conditions to be met.

Is there another job on earth where boffins are paid million-dollar salaries to put their cronies in charge of investment bungles worth billions?

Going by the legendary "foresight" of the inept minions this regime has tasked to handle public funds (from "Suzhou" in China to "Optus" in Australia, the Thaksin debacle in Thailand to the telco fiasco in Indonesia - and all that before any potential "portfolio-booster" coming up in Myanmmar), one could indeed be forgiven for thinking Kaesong (and perhaps, the DPRK at large) is the next big thing for investors.

Amazing to think there're actually folks who question the necessity on the need for checks on a regime whose investments funded by public-funds are as credible as Nick Leeson's trading.

ASEAN seems to have its hands tied, with its non-meddling-in-other's-affair policy. I managed to catch Malaysia's foreign minister Syed Hamid Albar's interview on tv. Felt like smacking the guy Laughing WTH was this guy trying to say? No sanctions, no nothing, so what can he offer? Just hot air? Depending on how ASEAN handles the situation, the organisation may be viewed as a weakling.

Where's US in the picture anyway? Aren't they going to be the US-comes-to-save-the-day action hero?

i'm curious about burmese people in sg, especially tourists. there's even a myanmar hub at peninsula plaza selling myanmar goods. now, rental there is damn ex, burmese are not known to be well-off and the few rich ones are friends of the junta and the corrupt.

The present events in Myanmar will be the first test in the efforts by ASEAN to set up a Human Rights mechanism to raise our ASEAN stature on the World Stage.

If ASEAN cannot get their act together and step in to help the Myanmar Government to resolve the situation - then it confirms the views of the World that ASEAN is another Third Rate Regional Organisation that lack moral values.

This hands-off attitude will surely shoot alot of holes into the credibility of Confucian Values, Islamic Values, Budhist Values and Christian Values that are propagated by the respective Governments of the member ASEAN countries.
