Your remarks on your sg education system experience

I observed that the only useful subject around speaker's corner is "philosophy".

fymk SG

Doesn't matter if the concentration is ON or OFF maths and science , what international breakthroughs in science and technology had come out of Singapore since the creative sound blaster?

Isn't the excuse for using FTs based on maintaining competitiveness in Singapore by controlling wage rise ? First world country third world pay for the minons. Well think about it this way, what makes you think that Singapore can prevent talented Singaporeans from taking up even more competitive wages overseas?

Yes , no rote learning means no foundation. However we are talking about Singapore, people are not taught or encouraged how to think critically or else Singapore would have more than a singular party. People are fed the ideology that without the current government , Singapore would collapse. 66.6% are fed that ideology and trust me , I met some people who truly believe that.

only memorising will works , real life application dont works

Lin Yu SG

what about money management and accounting?

Wega007 SG

wow.. like that ppl have to write essay.. from Pre school all the way up to Uni level..
or you are concern with Uni?
at different level, I believe answers will be different.

kramnave SG

Only important in speaker's corner if its bad money management and accounting, else its not political news but business news. To be useful, wise and make sense in speaker's corner you must be anti-pap, anti-LKY and do not read ST no matter what, those are the essentials, no two ways about it. An optional one would be that no matter the consequences that may befall us, change is needed.

Icemoon SG

If you like real life application so much, no offense, but you should just go and get the NTC cert *first*.

After you have satisfied your thirst for real life application, then you can consider whether you want to upgrade to poly, then uni.

Go on. Wink

By the way, what is real life application for top careers like doctors and lawyers? How can you be a doctor if you can't even memorise things?

Icemoon SG

Actually we have quite a few breakthroughs in science and technology, like in genetic science? Not only sound blaster came from Singapore .. how about the thumbdrive from Trek? Wink

Since 2001 many forum feedbacks have been given to feedback unit telling them to stop all the academic teachings and concentrate on practical broad-based education giving higher recognition to Poly ITE and other useful skill-educations and knowledge application courses.

Education must produce future entrepreneurs, technologists and skills to create jobs and new technology start-ups.

May be government has listened. May be not. Only ministers or EDB should know. We don't see new technology applications yet but there are a lot of talks of success just based on news and media hype.

If government wants to truly claim NUS and NTU are great success then the ministers must be able to show more like our NUS and NTU graduates have gone on to become most sought after employees all over the world like the graduates of Harvard or MIT etc.

Right now they could only contend within the small civil service and still not seen as contributing to the growth of the economy creating jobs winning Nobel Prizes or Scientific or Engineering awards.

NUS or NTU now only produce graduates who expect to be given high posts and high pays based on media hype and not real abilities yet.

Poh Ah Pak SG

Huh .. A.Maths is useless skills? Laughing

You mean other countries don't teach Maths?

Edit: if Maths is really so useless, I wonder why Biz courses have so much Maths in them.

Maths is useful and necessary, but not A.Maths.

Specialized subjects like A.Maths shouldn't be in a secondary school subject course.

kramnave SG

It makes the transition into uni and poly simpler…

reddressman SG

Oh, I forgot to highlight...

The best things in the world, such as:

1. our text books on Accounting, Economics, Science, etc ALL , I mean really, ALL comes from the West.

2. best products and services, methodologies, best practises, etc majorly come from the west. I would say ALL originated from the west and Japan is innovative about these.

3. Medicine. West.

4. Whatever you touch , see or hear or use, technology from where?

I wonder which singapore originated text book is studied by anyone in this world. I mean, i belive many many right? but i no proof. Wink

Without the West. How can. anything be. ?

I wonder how singapore education can be based on its own text book? maybe maybe not. like this say is safe.

Poh Ah Pak SG

It makes the transition into uni and poly simpler...

Then the system is flawed.

No offence , i trying to say that singapore edu system is like make u eat up the book and make sure you can spit everything back into the test paper

Yup , im taking NTC now and is better than my sec sch life. During my course , i find that in theory i get infos of the intro process result. Is important i know , but when we step into pratical side , it different , during the ''process'' part , we encounter alot unexpected problem , and we often gathered with the teacher to discuss the problem. Well , i shd say i prefer alive studies

When one intrested in one field , he will have the passion to know more about it , studying it deeper , and to the basic. When you one it , you learn without being forced. So i personally feel that , we need basic till sec 1 , then move into various field to study their needed math or science

School is making us learn all math science watever in all field. math - algrebra sector , vector etc. but have we ever ask why we learn them for ?
What the real life application for these fomula ?
Are we going to be an engineer ?
How and where is this skill needed in engineering ?
Is there anywhere beside engineering i need these fomula ?
Or are wo learning it just to pass O lvl ?

But standing in MOE view ar , i think learn everything better la , coz young people nowaday no aim no goal , keep wasting own time , better make them learn everything so nxt time working still got 1 or 2 skill can use de

Really no offence , pls comment me if you got any view , i may be wrong Wink Then we can discuss on my view

Scientists, doctors and highly educated people of anywhere, the text books concepts, theories and literature. Come from which country?

Singarpeoa edicatione certainely must be also good good lah.

reddressman SG

I like to know, HOW TRUELY GREAT is sg educatione systemz?

GReat as in world leading. regarded by the world as the defacto standard.

Great system must produce great people. But Lousy system also produced great people.

system is one thing. But who from which country wrote the education text books used by the best intellectuals in the world studying in the best universities in the world like Oxford, Cambridge and all the usual suspects?

How does singapore university fare in this area?

vIn.Warrior SG

Certain things are useless.

Formulae, chemical equations, dates of events etc are what students memorise to score well.

But after we graduate and proceed to working life, these are really not useful at all. (assuming your're not an education officer or working in labs.)

I feel there should be more aspects on developing critical-thinking, Public Relations, and confidence. Isn't these the most essential and fundamental requirement to survive in this society? (compared to formulaes eqn etc)

GPGT SG

Singapore’s Education System is overrated already.
