Personal displeasures notwithstanding, I personally feel that
careers in the army are fairly unstimulating.
Now correct me if I'm wrong, but I've always wondered why people
labelled the SAF as a wayang place. After going through NS, I can
see why. I'm not saying its an easy job, but it seems to be one
that is fairly undemanding in most aspects, physical exertions
excepted.
As for the volunteers, realistically, if Singapore depended solely
on them, Singapore probably wouldn't exist today.
Also, I don't think this problem of high turnover rates is one
that's limited to our army. I have a friend who's an ex-US Marine.
He told me he left soon as he could, that it was a waste of his
time. Really changed my perception of a professional army (i.e. one
without conscripts).
