There is truth in the media being tightly regulated and to a degree "controlled" i guess but that doesn't mean people who agree with the government are blind followers or affected by propaganda through the state-controlled media...i hope you see my point. The papers can only say so much...some actions by Chee Soon Juan for example, no matter what the papers say, positive or negative, cannot be justified in my opinion.

They are working just as hard right?

What I mean is, so many say singapore lack of opposition talents.

If hike their salaries to near minstor level har , would singaporean talents be tempted to put in more effort ? Like this may be the mother of all solution to solve singapore opposition lack-talent crisis. Its really unhealthy to have a weak opposition in singapore. Ying must balance the Yang. Cool

Those would probably provide me with views, commentaries, whatever you call them. I'm talking about news....speaking of alternative views, i don't mind reading some of them but frequently, they only serve to be the shadow government, just finding something to oppose to. I can think for myself. So i don't understand why some people are against reading news from the straits times. I would like to ask again, is the version of news we get from the straits times significantly different from those we can obtain from the web ?

I suscribe to the Straits Times, i go to theonlinecitizen.com, newsintercom.org and the various political party websites. For news i rely on Straits Times and online i do yahoo news and channelnewsasia. For alternative views, i do go to the other websites including malaysia-today.net for things malaysian.

They remain "alternative", almost every article i have read have something bad to say but nothing good. I don't mean to say it is wrong as some articles i feel have some truth. However, those are not news. I can't possibly rely on everything bad someone has to say on select issues about the country and the government.

Relying on such "news" and denying news proper runs the danger of having nothing but negative thoughts and opinions.

Why don't we start a thread listing all of the alternative blogs, forums, news websites etc that are not under state control and make it sticky?

This can help to break out of the propaganda encirclement.

What do you think about the recent ST article on employment in Singapore? Have you read the alternative views to that?

What about deliberate omission or downsizing of articles for eg
- LKY and GCT suing FEER
- our press freedom ranking
- World happiness index

Who can forget that the mass attendance at WP's rallies were not even publicised in last year's elections?

I take reports on employment figures or Singapore being this hub and that hub in future..creating blah blah amount of jobs with a pinch of salt. Mainly because i know what i want. It doesn't matter to me if the IR is going to create this amount of jobs as i never ever wanted to work there for example. Many have this dilemma of choosing to study something because the prospects are good etc. Some have parents forcing them. I don't really care because i know what i want.

To add on, so what if small coverage is given to the lawsuits, press freedom rankings, WP rally attendances etc. Is a big deal ? what i don't get from straits times i get from alternative websites anyway. Do i blame Straits times for that ? No. Is it a big deal to me ? No. Is it life and death ? No. Does it affect me in anyway ? No. I may spot the discrepancy but so what ?

We should also consider the choice of "News" in our papers.

In my media class, I was taught by an ex-editor:

1) Choice of news

2) Choice of first page headlines

3) Choice of "selection of news"

4) Choice of "buffers" - Other "good" News in the vicinity of a bad news. Also days and days of centred-ness on "humane" issues "related" to the bad news. Where attention is diverted to related "heartwarming" issures to divert attention away from the real problem.

5) Photography angles to make government look better than opposition.

6) Timing to release news.

Every of the points here can add to a state controlled government propaganda. And she hinted at our mass media.

She told us that if we thought "News" has to be gospel if it comes on TV News and Straits Times, we had to think again.

They report what they want you to see, hear and think.

I regard Singapore mainstream media as nothing but complete propaganda.

It seems that there are some here who still harbour illusions about Singapore mainstream media.
