AndrewPKYap SG It is very difficult to teach critical thinking and given that they have no wish to do that since they prefer sheepish citizens to thinking citizens, to hope that they will teach critical thinking it is as good as impossible. People that are sheepish can live life reasonably well but will never scale the heights of human activities that require good thinking skills, including real happiness. All those that know what good thinking skills are, raise your hand.
maurizio13 SG It's not about faults minor or major; it's the fundamental fault, the constitution when it was first conceived and later amended to suit the purpose of the ruling party. Alot like the pigs in Animal Farm.
ndmmxiaomayi SG This quote reminded me of one show... The guy said this: "I was taught all kinds of things, but no one has ever taught me what to do in a relationship." I was nearly mad when I heard that, but come to think of it, some things can never be taught. Critical thinking skills are never taught... there may be steps to follow, but that's all you can do. Whether you are able to think critically is another issue.
EarlNeo SG What if after studying a subject for a year, then when exam came and u found out none of the question ask is been taught b4 or none of the solution can be found in the note given by the lecturer? What would most s'porean react to this kind of examination? That is the kind of education that is been taught oversea.... They teach u the fundamental, teach u how and where to source for your solution and reading material, they teach u how to analyse, etc. Such way of education force u to be more independent, learn to read beyond and think outside the box. That's why ppl oversea are more creative and tend to ask why!! Here, most dun even ask why.... they only ask, will it come out in the exam?
googoomuck SG There are differing schools of thought on critical thinking. Trained and knowledgeable instructors can impart the skills of critical thinking. Critical thinking is also critical inquiry, so critical thinkers investigate problems, ask questions, question authorities and traditional beliefs, challenge received dogmas and doctrines. If someone cannot tolerate criticism or hate to have his authority challenged, you can tell which school of thought he belongs to.
AndrewPKYap SG I have heard many speakers in churches say how amazed they are that in Singapore, there are so many young people in the churches compared to the west.... they will always say that GOD is doing a GREAT job here. If only they know the real reasons, that the youth are taught not to questions authorities even when the authorities rob them blind. That is why in Singapore, you have mega churches selling prosperity packed with youths. Yeah right, all authority must be correct!
jondizzle foshizzle SG Wrong!! Only Singapore! and maybe North Korea... This is absolutely the amount of brainwashing they do in the local schools. Filling young, impressionable minds with so much government propaganda. It's totally disgusting. I feel so sorry for those who have to learn this complete and utter bullcrap which promotes blindly following people in power (LKY).
Rock^Star SG Well, I'm not in the least surprised. This shows that LKY places a lot of emphasis on power retainment even after he's gone. Is this for the good of Singapore or PAP? Obviously, for the latter. What say you, Gazelle?
Icemoon SG So what's wrong with our textbooks? Unless they present the wrong historical facts, there is really nothing to argue about. Just like the role of the opposition is to "oppose" government policies in parliament, the role of any government-approved textbook is to educate the students from the government point of view. Isn't this what OUR SCHOOLS are teaching us .. to critically evaluate a source? In recent years, subjects like history and SS have steered away from essay-type questions to source-based questions.
Poh Ah Pak SG Unless they present the wrong historical facts, there is really nothing to argue about.Well the textbooks never teach Britain's strategy of pushing Nazi Germany eastwards to destroy the Soviet Union; they teach a bullshit version instead. School textbooks should teach proper history to youngsters. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Appeasement_of_Hitler
