Seriously, I acknowledge it true to a large extent that the cycling
event is not a nationally-important one but more of an
organisation-level one, which baffles me as to why a permit cannot
be granted for this.
If the event was a more nationally-important, given that netizens
generally believe the PAP would stop opposition parties at any cost
from engaging the public, I would impress it further impossible to
obtain a permit.
The issue isn't so much about the event but the permit rejection.
It is a litmus test for more "challenging" activities such as
peaceful protests, which I am convinced that a permit will never be
granted for until there is a change of government.
I have also received an e-mail from a netizen urging me to respond
to criticisms of WP not bringing up more important issues such as
the impending annuity policy. While I cannot represent the Party,
from my limited knowledge, the annuity policy will be discussed at
length in Parliament somewhere in September 2007. I stand corrected
as there may be changes in timeline.
[b]There are views that WP should bring up the issue immediately,
as some opposition parties without seats have done, instead of
waiting for Parliament sittings. Granted that a number of netizens
may feel that "speed defines the winner" but this is politics, not
kungfu
There is no concrete
evidence yet as to how being fast is beneficial as long as it is
not slow and the issue has not died down.
In my view, the opposition was elected into Parliament to allow it
to use Parliament as a platform to catch national attention. By and
large, Parliament sittings receive more coverage from what we term
as the "154th" than a press statement.
