a) Germany has a lower per 100,000 suicide rate of 13.5 as compared to finland 20.6, when its population is 15 times larger than Finland?

b) Singapore suicide rate is 9.5 as compared to Philippine of 2.1 when the latter's population is close to 20 times larger than Singapore?

Can you at least show us that you are capable of defending your argument and not always resort to name calling and giving long arse story which nobody wants to read? Laughing

That is possible, because most (not all) of the suicide cases in Singapore involves Singapore born Singaporeans. And it is also possible that figures reported by other countries could also be diluted with influx of migrants. For example Switzerland is know for many multl millionaire "immigrant" who migrate there for enjoy the low income tax.

What I couldnt understand is why in countries like Switzerland or Finland where quality and standard of living is so much better than Singapore still have such a high suicide rate.

why not compare singapore of a few years ago with current singapore? this

I think you should ask yourself why whiners in this forums like to compare Singapore quality and standard of living to the other developed countries, while comparing our cost of living to 3rd world countries?

Well why swiss suicide rates are higher is open to speculation. Unless we have enough information to make a reasonable educated analysis.

Think the concern should be that ours here in singapore is rising, even amidst an improving economy.

And if the minister in question really believes in the "others are better off and therefore I become depressed" theory, then it speaks of a even deeper social and cultural problem that could start a whole new, multiple page thread.

This article highlighted a rise in suicide rate in the middle age group, which means that this group of people were born in the 1960s, either before or after Singapore independence and grew up in the 70s. I do believe that during that time the literacy rate in this country is still very low and most schools are still being taught in mandarin instead of English.

Hence I do believe that these victims are mostly those who have been left behind by the fast economic transformation of this country over the past 42 years. Having said that, I also believe that there are also those who committ suicide because of financial problem such as taking loans from loan shark, gambling etc.

To tackle this problem, I think Singapore government and the community need to look into ways to recognise them as part of the builder of Singapore and offer financial aid to those who really deserve them. But I do believe that the most important help to these people will to be the love from their immediate family members.
