Should citizens be subjected to media indoctrination?

That there is a certain systematic mass indoctrination or mental conditioning of the masses by the state-controlled newspapers is probably not happening by coincidence or chance.

Perhaps some insiders could tell us whether the newspapers were being used for such purposes and why were the leaders putting so many of their trusted confidantes to be CEO and executive chairman of newspapers.

Some years ago in the hey day of communism, our leaders have been talking many times about the power of repetition or iteration with constant admonition that if something is utter long enough they will be believed and become the truths.

In other words, we the citizens have elected our leaders to practise some kind of occult over us citizens who may be using them to convert people to accept their harsh policies. No wonder the leaders never seem to relent on their wrongful policies which drive up the costs of living because these policies were being pushed through with such occult. No wonder they did not seem to mind unpopular and wrong policies to keep increasing their own rewards and pays using propaganda to convert us the citizens to accept them finally even though they may not serve the people's ultimate interest.

From perpetually increasing costs of living to rewarding themselves with highest salaries and taxing people to the hilt to build state surpluses, who are we citizens to complain but to resign to the fact that we are being treated like some guinea pigs of mental conditioning by repetition by the state-controlled newspapers.

No wonder we the citizens seem ever so naive as to accept anything no matter how hurtful to our own wellbeing or living as we are all guinea pigs to have to endure all these dehumanizing of degrading.

It is time to ask some serious questions of the leaders. Are we humans and should we continue to be subjected to unjust indoctrination, occult or black magics ready to ensnare or warp our minds and mould them to suit their own desires.

Unfortunately, many Singaporeans are mistaken in accepting all that we see, and fail to read widely. In no small part, is this part of our upbringing, and children aren't encouraged to question status quo.

Sometimes, a country needs to take a hard knock before it understands the magnitude of its mistake.

Is it any coincidence repressive regimes devoid of press freedom churn out masses who are disproportionately more ignorant of going-ons around the world beyond their respective self-proclaimed paradises?

If you need any evidence, just speak to an average Joe in Finland, Singapore and Vietnam to get a grip of how vastly different their respective mindsets are.

That said, isn't the lack of press freedom - which basically deprives a fundamental human right to be informed and by extension, limiting the rights of the individuals - an integral part of most despotic regimes whose grip on power depends very much on stringing an ignorant and compliant citizenry along?

Perhaps, as some would put it, it's no exaggeration to suggest specious diatribes in the form of propaganda are more obscene than the most explicit pornography known to man. At least, man, for most parts, willingly indulge in the latter with an informed mind of what to expect, unlike the pack of lies and polemics masked by the smokescreen of more nonchalant causes in the case of the former.

And if there was no redrawing electoral boudaries to their advantage, do you think PAP still can get statistically impossible results such as winning 77 out of 81 seats in 1991 GE, with only opposition winning almost 40%of the votes?

I think in a democracy such as Singapore's, THIS is what the People wanted.

Those who were lucky enough to get the chance to Decide had Decided and by the virtue of Democracy, the rest get to 'enjoy' the fruits of their decision.

Thus, we can say that while MINORITY disagree on Control of Information and etc etc, MAJORITY like it. As frustrating as this may make some of you feel.

The status quo and the near future is foreseen and foretold. Its time to Reap what we collectively sowed. Cool Viva La Singapur! Viva La Democrazi.

Knowing something and choosing not to act on it is as good as not knowing unfortunately. And the minority is powerless against the majority.

And yes, we reap what we sow... and in some cases, I am hopeful we do sow.

Insiders will not provide any info unless they are giving up their rice bowls. Newspapers are under the control of the govt, as such they have to do whatever instructions they receive from them. It is possible that MMLee meets the top management of the newspapers as a form of control over the media.

Whatever, the newspapers has no credibility. They are so crappy to publish article saying that shoppers and retailers not affected by the GST hike.

Sometimes i think people in this forum is drunk on the concept of democracy, viewing it as some sort of magical elixir. Like somehow all our economic and social problems will be fixed once we have REAL democracy. I only ask you to look at the US to see the amount of problems they're having now.

In some ways, these people are no better than the islamic fundamentalists in Malaysia who wants to create an islamic state.

Don't get me wrong, i'm not a PAP supporter. In fact i disagree with many of their policies and have nothing but contempt for their so called "elites".

Agreed the newspaper in Singapore now are total trash, only reporting on what's good about the government. But that is not to say that the government has done nothing good for the people. It seems to me that this forum is starting to sink into a hate forum, instead of one where meaningful discussion can take place.

This forum is still available to us does it not? And all the information that others post from other foreign websites? Unlike the regimes in Myanmar or China who seeks to deny access to such forums.

I think you are missing the point. The point is not just about democracy but accountability, of which we have little of the latter. The trouble with the current situation is that because our democracy is so tailored to the ruling party's designs, that there is no avenue to voice our concerns, demand information, and accountability. In a normal democracy, such avenues exists but they don't in Singapore.

People who work in the media business, not just the news, are all working there voluntarily right?

so, I think they know what they have gotten into and they know what is it that they write and say. The decision is theirs and they made this decision.
