Having a dual citizenship system is not going to help the
country retain her talents. It's still nothing more than the
numerous lip-service ideas and campaigns brought forward in the
recent decade to try to attract people back home.
A sense of belonging has to be instilled in people. They need to
know that they are valued, that they are not just a mere cog in the
economic machine. Every person, employed or not, married or single,
young or old, contributes to the economy, and yet the government
chooses to single out the unemployed, the single, the old, the
uneducated, treating them as though they do not belong here, as
though they are un-needed, and even as though they do not exist;
Remember LKY's arrogant claim that there were no homeless or
beggars in Singapore last year during the IMF?
Such high-handedness does not instill a sense of belonging. And
unlike what the great one thinks, it does not motivate the
have-nots to perform. It just makes them jaded, and they will in
turn influence the people around them to think the same way.
Consciously or not, these people will bring up the next generation
to think not for the country, but for themselves.
No sense of belonging, no sense of patriotism, no national
pride.
