Murray originally wanted to follow the classic mid-engine layout, but Hubbert overruled him.

In any case, the placement of the engine is not the real issue here - weight distribution and centre of gravity are more relevant. As long as your weight distribution is 50/50, it doesn't matter. With a front engine and rear wheel drive, the cg is necessarily raised because the crankshaft has to pass under the cabin.

It's probably best that Murray left F1 when he did - after the MP4/4, everything else would have been downhill.

patience... there is the McLaren Mercedes F1/F2/F3 project just starting to go on....
The F1 project would be in the supercar segment, where the Pagani Zonda and the Ferrari Enzo is, the F2 project would be within the brackets of the grand tourer like the Ferrari 575M, Aston Martin Vanquish, while the F3 project is to enter the Ferrari 360M, Lamborghini Gallardo segment. This was only revealed a few months back, I'd say it'd need a couple of years b4 any significant results are revealed.

It depends. There is no "standard" layout for normal saloon cars, although FF is favoured due to its compactness and simplicity, and since normal saloon cars do not need superb handling since they won't be driven at racing speeds, FF is acceptable.

Hmm - hadn't heard that, but then again I haven't really been keping track of late. I remember they raised this idea some time in 1997/8, and then let it drop out of sight. Just as well, anyway - it will be interesting to see what they come up with.

Gordon's a genius..sometimes he called & asked abt my layman opinions on his projects..(hahahaha!!) but do u noe he & Rowan atkinson are "are-karliao" so many times Rowan the Mr Bean got to test drive Maclaren project cars..esp when he whracked his F1 last year!! he got a new one though!! hahaha
u guys shud read his articles on topgear regarding the mac F1 and his 1st Ferrari 456GTA!! an delightful read indeed, my good man, a delightful read..
