We had some impromptu career guidance from our lecturer yesterday. He says, at least for the next 5 years, the hot subjects are: genetics, proteomics, immunology. What say you?

Well... those hot subjects will continue to be hot, as long as diseases like HIV, bird flu, dengue, etc are not eradicated from the face of Earth.

But hot subjects is not equal to hot job markets. Nowadays more and more biomedical processes are automated. (One day, even washing test tubes may be automated.) Also, many other countries are catching up with us and competing with us...

Genetics if you are in the US.

Proteomics if you are in the US and Australia.

Immunology if you are in the US and Australia and UK.

But most of these research jobs require a PhD while the diploma grad/bachelor grads do all the dirty work.

Oxford Mushroom: I am not an economist but as someone in the biomed industry, I would say yes, you can certainly get a job in this industry in 2 years' time but alot depends on your qualifications. It is going to get alot more competitive.

When it first started, Singapore was so desperately short of post-docs that anyone with a PhD in a relevant field can probably get a decent paying job. Now it is possible to get a Chinese post-doc with a year's experience in a reputable research lab who is prepared to take the job for S$3k...

Oh me God, that's a revealing RMB $15,160.07... why should FT Chinese mind a lower pay? whether they stay or leave Singapore, they have it 'tailored-made'... in any case ur salary's from taxpayers' coffers if ur 'company' hasn't any revenue yet... think about that... Mr. Green

It is high risk but also high potential returns, like many investments...you can lose a billion but if you struck paydirt you can earn billions in return.

Lots of people will try to infringe your patent rights...that's why pharmaceutical companies have big legal departments sueing everyone. I fact, a friend in the pharma industry tells me they rejoice when they hear of copy drugs in China that turn out to be contaminated and harmed patients. Such adverse publicity will ensure those in developed nations will pay for the real thing.

These are very broad subjects...you have to differentiate yourself further to compete. I would consider cancer vaccine, development of biologicals and use of targeted therapies such as monoclonal antibodies and PTK inhibitors, development of smaller, bedside diagnostic kits using microarray technology.

If a Chinese FT working in Singapore is happy with a $3k pay and a Singaporean with similiar skills is not, the Chinese has the job.

Investors take risks and the benefits. The higher the risks, the greater the potential returns.

Pharmaceutical companies spend alot of money running clinical trials. They are prepared to spend but they need highly experienced people with the relevant qualifications. At the clinical trial stage, they will need clinical staff (doctors, nurses etc), product specialists (scientists and doctors from the pharmaceutical company's development team) and good biostatisticians.
