officially even when the shoguns held power, the rule was still
under yamato.. a ceremonial court more than a practical one, and
the families would dwell and lavish their little noble world
without a care for the outside world.
much like our president and PAP relationship. when the shoguns feel
like it, they would pay a visit to the emperor. and inter-family
marriages kept the shogunate authority legitimate.
so on paper, can say its unbroken. 
chinese dynasty, up and down, broken and divide, den joined up
