The reason given in our social studies text-book for the need to
maintain racial/religious harmony:
Boost confidence of foreign investors, increase rate of tourism,
provide a stable foundation for economic growth, etc etc. Notice
how almost all the factors are very pragmatic (aka, about monetary
advantage). There's no mention on how people of all races and
religion are equal to start with, and that there's no need for
mutual tolerance if one see all as equal in the first place.
The reason given in our social studies text-book for the need to
have good governance:
To set pragmatic policies with foresight, maintain prosperity of
the nation, economic growth (again), accepting public opinion but
still firm in their believes (that explains the
casi...sorry...integrated resort). No mention on how a good
goverment is one who is truly compassionate and care for the
citizen's well-being.
Almost the entire book is writting about how to maintain the
physical well-being and growth of the nation.
Is this a result of, or a cause of Singaporeans becoming more and
more realistic?
