More people left Australia permanently in 2005/06 than ever
before, a new government report shows.
The Population Flows: Immigration Aspects document shows
almost 180,000 people permanently settled in Australia in 2005/06,
but almost 70,000 people permanently left the
country.
"Emigration has increased steadily in recent years and is now at
its highest level ever," the report says.
People born in Australia make up just over half of those leaving
permanently, while Kiwis are second on the list, accounting for 21
per cent of the departures. UK citizens accounted for 16 per
cent.
The report shows most of the Australian-born citizens left for
economic reasons, such as a better job, while those born overseas
often returned to their birthplace due to feelings of homesickness
or insecurity.
Young families made up the majority of Australian-born emigrants,
with 46 per cent aged between 25 and 39 years and 16 per cent aged
under 10 years.
The report also shows Australia lost an abundance of skilled
workers last financial year, with almost 33,000 moving overseas
permanently.
But the country attracted more skilled workers than it lost, with
almost 50,000 skilled migrants settling in Australia permanently
and almost 100,000 granted temporary "Skills Stream" visas.
In fact, out of all the migration and humanitarian programs to
bring immigrants to Australia, the Skills Stream visa attracted the
most people, increasing 25 per cent on the previous year.
This visa is only granted if the applicant is deemed employable in
Australia or with a capacity to invest or do business in
Australia.
Amanda Vanstone wrote the foreword to the report, her last as
immigration minister.
Senator Vanstone said both permanent and temporary migration were
vital sources of skilled workers for Australia.
"Skilled people are more mobile than ever before," she said.
"It is important that Australia provides options that help meet
this global reality in an efficient manner."
Senator Vanstone has been officially replaced by former Workplace
Relations Minister Kevin Andrews.
