Unless the troops are made of kryptonite , thermonuclear weapons have NO preventative effect. Take for example , Hiroshima and Nagasaki - do you think there were remaining japanese soldiers on the ground to defend?

Like I say now the A bombs used on Japan are a toy to the H bombs in nuclear armed countries. And look at chemical weapons - look at the intense damage of what polonium can do. Silent killing ...until it is too late.

The only useful allies Singapore has is USA who is using it as a base, and China. The same USA and China that both have nuclear arsenals. Countries like them which have an vested strategic or economic interest in Singapore are the political block against invasions. Same way Israel is surviving except Malaysia won't let any such thing happen to Singapore because any damage to Singapore will overflow across the border . Without the Americans ( who want a base in the middle east while investing in oil there) or the Europeans (same case)- you think Israel will still be standing?

Singapore also has another advantage - if it is levelled , it is more troublesome for the invaders to rebuild it since it has no other natural resources except a nice port harbour .

To a certain degree your statement is correct but a very small degree. The only defensible use NS has is really against Malaysia or Indonesia if they decide to take over . Malaysia is booming now and has no interest in Singapore. Indonesia is too unstable internally to even try because Malaysia will step in . Singapore acts as the buffer between Malaysia and Indonesia.

Besides regional stability is the key to economic boom - everyone benefits. Wars drain resources - look at USA in Iraq - they spend like crazy on their resources but they can afford it and they probably want to test out weaponry there . Look at Vietnam war - they tested napalm and agent orange .

OT is paid for me in terms of time in lieu unless they want me to work in ungodly hours ( specified as before 7 am and after 7 pm )

However from the experience in Australia - they allow Australians defence leave for reservist duties .

They not only allow it , they cannot object to it and it is not compulsory to let them know that a person is actually in the reservist forces until you are fully employed and you get a deployment letter.

That was what my colleague told me about the system. Some girl took off for 3 months for reservist training. Furthermore, the organisation need not pay that 3 months . The reservist training pays the reservist for 3 months.

Just adding lessons learnt overseas to overcome the foreign talent policies . Not sure if it is the same with Singapore.

About 10 years ago , I remember arguing with an MP over this issue in a forum. My argument was against the rationale for keeping foreign talents in Singapore. I asked him why not let FT come in for 3 years and teach the Singaporean how to do things if you cannot find the skilled people instead of telling us all about requiring people with global experience. Or either that, send out your own Singaporeans as FT to gain the global experience and come back. He just kept trying to protect their FT policy and he just didn't bother to answer me , probably because I wasn't elite enough mah. I remember he was just giving assurances and some idiots actually believe that shat .

Most of the forumners were worried about it but you have some idiots who say Singapore will be for Singaporeans still and we need bangladeshi workers ( who are actually not FTs but FWs).

That was an indicator , a sort of forewarning to me that I cannot just stay in Singapore and expect to go up further in life if I don't have the elite education or elite connections. Not to mention the MPs will just do lipservice to the FT policy and as you can see from Wee Shu Min's daddy - they won't care because they just want you to get out of their uncaring elite face .

They allow employers to age discriminate against Singaporeans and you will definitely see a brain drain go out of Singapore once they figure what is going on.

Take for example what I heard about SIA from a friend's father who was an engineer with them . Once proudly owned and managed by Singapore and Singaporeans. Now you employ new and cheaper foreign people to work there - use the old ones to teach- then retrench the old ones - you get a nutbolt falling from the sky.

The old technicians are offered lucrative contracts back but they won't teach anymore because they got the sack for teaching - so they are wiser . No loyalty left - no one to pass on the skills at all. Why? Because the culture is such in Singapore that once you teach anyone - you outlive your use and you get sacked and replaced by the cheaper newer foreign talent. I learn all these from talking to retirees who are enjoying life in Australia now.

I don't think dual citizenship has an impact on changing your life though. I know of one indigenous australian holding UK citizenship and a few australian born citizens who hold european passports.

To be brutally honest here, I rather have dual citizenship policy in place.
It is not about giving foreign talents an advantage especially if you can put a time lag on how fast they can apply for citizenship like 2 years continous stay in a country etc and additional requirements like english test etc.

Alternatively , put in a rule that states only Singaporean born can have dual citizenship. Americans put it the other way around ...only american born citizens cannot have dual citizenship.

It is about giving Singaporeans the advantage of going two ways like the foreign talents. That way the government can no longer say that it needs people with global experience when you have Singaporeans coming to and fro. Singapore is a land with human resource - with resources - you have import and export. Right now we got exports going ...the imports are all foreigners . The exports won't come back because the imports are going to challenge them not in terms of skill and experience but rather that of price.

Open the market . Let it flow 2 ways. That way you also have employers trying to keep the real talented Singaporeans in Singapore by offering them competitive salaries and the government will have to bring in incentives to retain Singaporeans to work in Singapore or else employers will go somewhere else for business.

What to do? Singapore pays 1 million to ministers and the best policy they come up with is FT ....

There are ways to undo the damage but it will take a few years to rebuild up Singapore as a place for Singaporeans since FTs are entrenched in the system now.

Australia invites FTs to come over because their talented Australians are being drained from their system into the US or Europe. However they keep their australians up on the top on and FTs below.

Singapore invites FT to come to sit on the top. And when you complain about FT taking jobs away - the distraction is directed at lower positioned FTs with the reason that they lower costs to make it competitive. So you cannot win the argument against FT policies unless you know what is truly going on. With the case of Singapore, highly doubt that . Singaporeans cannot even see the detailed budget or reserves for what they are truly worth.

Japan didn't want domination for the sake of domination, Thailand kawtao and gave them whatever they wanted, so they didn't take over Thailand. Singapore was taken over because Singapore was the base for the British forces in the Far East, and also strategic port for merchant vessels from the West, until they completed the railroad from Burma to Vietnam.

Who has got nuclear weapons and want to use it on Singapore? who has got the ability to launch the nuclear weapons at us? Are we really worried about the North Korean nuclear weapons? Nobody build a conventional armed forces for fear of nuclear weapons. Conventional armed forces are built despites of the present of nuclear weapons.

How about the foreign talent policies in regards to Singapore's NS men's morale? Serve 2 years and then worry about holding on to a job while doing reservist and when 40 , expect to become redundant with some girl telling you to get out of her elite uncaring face and her MP daddy supporting her.

Look at what one of the forumners said about what a foreign talent HR person said to him when he applied for the job. You think that will help morale of the civillian army ?
