You do not have to 'move' towards globalisation...it is an
inevitable fact. Capital can be moved out in a night as the Thai
experience shows a few days ago. If your costs are higher,
investors will go elsewhere. If you block cheap foreign labour into
the country like what they do with construction workers in Japan,
the costs of construction will increase. Singapore is too small to
be a fortress disconnected from the world. Our prosperity has
always relied on free trade and that means free movement of both
capital and labour.
Before the casinos open, low-income earners should consider
undergoing training as croupiers. You don't need a University
degree but you do need training for that....and there is already a
shortage for such people now in Macau. The manpower shortage will
only become more severe when our IRs open.
"A croupier at SJM said that when the Galaxy casino was opened, his
colleagues with six years' experience in the croupier business just
waited for calls. Seasoned croupiers only needed to pass a simple
interview, and their monthly salary would jump from MOP13,000 to
MOP17,000." (MOP 17,000= S$3270.63)
