I have a bad feeling it's going to backfire for the PAP.
Truth is, it is my opinion that if a certain party intends to
improve their ballot margins, they really should stop all this
jibber jabber about what style of political kung fu they are using
and get down to addressing the core issues.
I do not think the stick and carrot thing is working out, if one
goes to the opposition wards one might discover as much as there is
much talk about upgrading and funds and the like, there also exists
this ethos among the citizens there that somehow they are but the
last few who have a say in the way the country is run. In these
areas notions like political freedom, free speech, personal
responsibility probably hold more sway, and one only needs to look
at the reaction in the opposition wards when it was announced that
the ruling party has failed yet again, to take these places. There
were people cheering in the coffee shops and it goes a long way to
say about what they thought about the very attractive carrot.
I think the PAP is missing the point. I don't think the people of
the opposition wards go for the opposition because they are good at
pointing out mistakes or problems with the way the country is run
but probably because, as grossly under equipped as they are to yet
run a nation, they do hold more respect for other notions of
freedom that are often swapped out for the "bread and butter". But
I think that is one angle the PAP is leery of taking yet.
