no matter what the media spins out about how well the employees
have it coming, we are still at the mercy of unscrupulous companies
who paid a pittance starting salary, unreasonable work hours and
laughable benefits...
For those still unemployed and under-employed, some useful
advice...
Rise Above the Crowd
"If you have a job now, you'd be crazy to leave it," warns Viscusi.
But if you are currently unemployed or desperate to find a
different job, these tips will help distinguish you from the
masses.
Separate Yourself from the Competition
If it's down to you and another equal candidate, offer to temp or
work on a per-project basis for 60 to 90 days. Employers may be
enticed by this offer, because it allows them to test the water
with you before making the commitment to full-time employment and
benefits.
Don't Rely on Recruiters or Headhunters to Find You a
Job
The fee involved for employers to find you this way may be a
financial burden they'd rather avoid.
Be Open to Other Employment Options
If you literally cannot find job opportunities in your area, don't
wait for them to appear. Explore other career possibilities beyond
your typical scope.
Be Patient
Employers are inundated with resumes now for limited positions.
Being too aggressive in the interview process is a turnoff. Send a
follow-up letter after your interview, and keep in touch with the
employer as appropriate.
