Wah, as PM not easy job huh, comes under such tight scrutiny... But if I am not wrong, their family should be inside the Forbes top 10 list... They own so much things, only some transparency issues are keeping others from knowing their true wealth, hence unable to put them inside the Forbes top 10 list.

Sometimes I wonder if it's good or bad to have the Lee family in charge of everything, I wonder what might have gone wrong without them, but then again, what might have gone so much better without them... hmmm, I wonder.

for a start... you dont have the numbers... to prove your hypothesis,

secondly.. unless the govt is brain dead... dont you think they would control the income gap within manageable condition by simply manipulating the FT immigration?(if assuming that your claim above is indeed true.)

high investment (such as FDI), spendings(such as tourist and foreign labourers) and income(your annual pay rise) automatically leads to higher demand for goods and services across the board through ripple effect..

which leads to higher pay, higher interest and higher prices(inflation)

that is the way of economics...

if you want the best of both world... high pay, low prices... you gotta cross the border or take an effort and travel a bit to locations where prices are lower due to lower demands because of one reason or another. (such as low income like indonesia batam)

I encourage one and all to seek your fortune elsewhere...If they FTs can come, we can also be FTs mah....our standard of english is not too bad compared to others, of course not saying perfect, we should try our luck elsewhere...be FTs...though we all should know it won't be a bed of roses elsewhere but at least there will be wide open spaces....more variety and more flexibilty...

yes... as someone noted (in fact every donkey with a brain also knows) buissness is like warfare... dont expect parity, equality, justice and fairness.

the last man standings is king.. the rest can go and bite the dust.

if you think that singapore govt is unfair... wait till your buissness goes oversea.... where even the laws is something like the weather, it changes everyday.

but as entrepreneur, you already knows that.. question is.. how you gonna pick up the challenge and overcome the constraints that is laid around you.

on matters of good governance and govt policies... you should ask the man who make or approve those policies.. i am not the govt spokesman and i have no intention to put my words in their mouth.

good for you... the govt has been encouraging us to go oversea and explore... everytime i go to some official functions.. they always KPKB, ask us go shanghai, go bombay, go to some unknown lands and ask us to learn from them.

in fact... i think they are correct ... even if we dont go there to work.. at least go and see what others has done and learn from them... so that we could improve ourselves and improve our country.

if we always hide inside singapore and stereotype our mind that we are the centre of the world and the rest of asia is garbage dump... i think we will regret in the future.

foreign workers does help to bring down the cost side of construction like your HDB flats, but the amount it bring down is dependent on the proportion of their wages as compare to the overall total cost of construction.

but the HDB selling prices is determined by demand side factors which could be "controlled" and manipulated to ensure a good return on "investment" Mr. Green

to put it simply... lets say you grow apple... if you use singaporean to grow apple.. it cost 1 cent to grow one apple, and you sell it in the market for 30 cent each.

tomolo u get a foreign labor to grow apple... and it cost 0.001 cent to grow one apple (cost did come down), and you go to market to sell apple.. but you still sell it at 30 cents each. Mr. Green or maybe even at 40cent each if you feel your apple is of higher quality because of your FT.

so... the cost did come down.. but the price did not...

and as i noted.. we dont have enough people... so die die must depend on FT.. not happy, also no choice.. unless you want our retail to close shop. but of course.. if needed to... we can easily diversify our labor source.. so we are not over-reliant on one particular nationality. Mr. Green

but having said that... the question is more messy than one might wanna admit.. and its an individual kind of thingy where u really need the one affected to take a positive and flexible approach.

and its rather hard to measure the success of govt retraining programes...

at times the govt got the right ideas.. but sadly they got the wrong people to run the programe and the things fall apart or even backfire..

however... after all things said and done.. we each have different apitude and capabilities... if you dont think you should be taxi driver or guard and are made for greater stuff..

first you gotta pick up the courage and try... with self confidence.. otherwise lamenting about how your capabilities and talents have gone unnotice would probably be your last words carved onto your gravestones.

FTs, where do you put them? how much do you pay them? isnt that the decision that your boss decide?

if your boss thinks he is getting good returns for the salary he is offering.. who are you to say otherwise?

who do u complain if your boss thinks that his FT is more talented then you? and on what basis can we demand our boss to decide for them how they choose to spend their money?

singapore isnt the only country in this world... if the govt tied up your boss hand.. your boss would probably just close shop, fire you and move oversea... with his FT.

bosses and buissness are answerable to the shareholders and to their superiors... if the buissness dont do well... it doesnt matter if you are local or FT... both will get the chop.

I don't see how or where FTs has brought down costs of an HDB flat, prices are still no much lesser than a private condo.

Hence, this greatly reduces and ties up people's CPF funds, which in turn translates into aged people who have little or no "Retirement Funds".

It's a flawed system.

Yup I agree with you Tripwire....

No sense in staying here...Of course by all means those who go overseas and find their heart in Sillypore, by all means come back and serve this little piece of rok....but for those who venture out and find the living overseas bearable like what I have done, stay on and come back only to visit your relatibes etc...

Best part is that when you are ready, can always give up citizenship and cash out your CPF, no need to wait till 55 y/o

Since they encourage us, let us also encourage others to come out of their pigeon HDB holes and see the rest of the world...esp China, India, eastern europe....hey heck, you can even get landed property with pigeon hole proceeds....YOu all should see the hunger and determination in China....

You all say Sillyporeans are hardworking, I agree.....but PRCians and Mumbains, Bangaloreans are 10x more hardworking....Think again sillyporeans....be afraid, be very afraid....and best part is that they do not have NS to worry about

Didn't you read Tripwire's illustration about apples? The costs have certainly come down but prices reamin high because there are people who are prepared to pay for them. The government stopped building 3-room flats for quite a while because there was no demand. Despite the lower prices, Singaporeans were prepared to pay more for a 5-room or Executive flat...with increased demand, prices rise.

You do not have to tie up your CPF funds. If you think that the HDB flat is not worth its price, then just rent a flat.

Did anyone watch the Get real segment that interviewed some chinese tourists stripping off their shirts and enjoying steamboat at a hawker center? they later bragged about being 'millionaires'. would you do that Laughing i think it was hilarious. maybe the producers had undertones in mind and attempted to paint certain foreginers in a bad light...
