The publicity has been milked for all its election worth. Now that they got their 'strong mandate', the NKF and Durai case has been downgraded to little more than sideshow distractions.

How come so many people already judge him guilty even before investigations and inquiries are completed?

He should be innocent till proven guilty.

We are Singaporeans, not Nazis.

His pay is very high compared to median Singaporean household income but this needs to be taken into context of his role - he is not just a volunteer or founder anymore.

He has devoted his time fully.

The governing board if following principles of governance paid him so that he don't get corrupt is merely doing what SG government does by paying top dollars to top people.

We can avoid all this problem by bench-marking CEO and other IPC/charities director salaries/remuneration/compensation.

Suggest that in future, IPCs consider using a remuneration consultancy in IPC or a reference such as http://www.guidestar.org/

This will allow comparable charities of similar size and funds pay their boards/employess/CEO appropriately.

We need to benchmark because Singapore is so small that there cannot be enough examples of similar IPCs/charities to provide guidance on this issue.

This will kill this issue since Ministerial pay also benchmarked.

Ah Ha! I don't support him and am neutral to him.

I do advocate a higher standard of our own behaviour with regards to the person accused of crimes.

And I also propose a solution to the disastifaction of people with what is seemingly arbritary salaries in the non-profit sector.

I think you are reasonable and will also agree that you cannot get someone to volunteer fulltime without pay, right?

I dont think he is a volunteer but a staff of a charitable org from where he is drawing a fat salary.

Wheter he is convicted of a crime is another issue, but in my view he is an unethical human being, who took about 40% of the donation from the public which supposed to be used for a good cause. This is $ which he needs not earn it but is given by the poor and rich citizens of Spore for the problemed youth.

I think he shd return part of the $ to the org for his own sake and his next generation.

Volunteer is volunteer, of course you are right. Perhaps I didn't express myself clearly. You would not expect him to volunteer for life and do this as a fulltime thing - how is he gonna survive??

So if after 1 year, for financial reasons he had to stop what he was doing (reportedly he went without pay for1 year), then perhaps Youth Challenge would have died in its infancy.

Of course, one cannot predict if someone else would have stepped up to the plate and bat, and bat just as well.

Ethically I agree with you that 40% of the donations is way too much, and is hard to justify. If he raised alot more this was only

given the high cost of living, $13k is not exactly superscale wage. it’s perhaps too much for a charity organisation..then again even if he were to draw half that, he would also recieve the same flak. if there’s anyone to be blamed, blame the group of people who insists high pay will stem corruption. well, that’s what we are seeing, no outright corruption but altruism is down the tubes. singaporeans no longer serve out of passion but only for the rewards.

Relatively speaking, it could also be argued that a 5 figure salary is indeed superscale.

FUNDAMENTALLY, as I had discussed in other posts, that the issue of public service and "altruism" is dead in Singapore - it is in part due to very realistic and pragmatic manner the gov of Sg conducts the affairs of state.

Ministerial pay in all regards is obscene in the face of PUBLIC SERVICE.

Whether is it superscale or not? It is not an issue,but whether yr consciousness is clear or not to take such a fat salary. this is not wat u had earned but was donated by the kind hearted ppls who may earn less than S$1k p.m but give it 4 the good cause.

If a charity gets $200k of donations a year. And its operated single-handedly 24/7 by a devoted "volunteer". Should he get $190k a year? (more than 10k a month)

Why not just hire 3 more admin staff. Pay them 2k each and down his own pay by 6k.

I doubt anyone would complain and he wont have to do anything except for assigning tasks to his admin staffs. Easy life rite?

Project your scenario to a National Scale - in which the Ministry of Finance collect over $100 Billion per year in revenue (from all sources), we probably can understand the logic of the Power Of One to demand that Ministers be paid appropriately to prevent the whiff of money from debilating their minds.

Unfortunately, at the State level, the 'One-Man Show' is only as the Final Arbiter of Decisions, and despite the division of labor amongst so many Ministries, the Million Dollar salary is applicable to all.

The familiar statement - " Difficult decision is never a popular decision, and if it must be made, it shall be made " - was also quoted by the Sole Leader of Youth Challenge, and he has a fine Mentor to learn from.

Most of the chaps in the Board of Directors themselves are the so called elites of the society (Mrs So and So, Dr that and that, etc etc) who usually earns much more then that amount, thats why to them its peanuts and easily justifiable..

On the other end of the scales, the most ordinary citizens will never see a 5 digit monthly income so to them $13K is damn alot.

What we really need is a proper salary scale for organisations which depends on the public's generousity. Such a salary scale should be reviewed annually by the NWC or other suitable authorities and adjusted accordingly

One thing to bear in mind is that, the general public should not be so narrow in the sense that folks working the charitable orgs must receive undermarket pay

For charitable orgs,the $ is not earned but donated by gerneral public,salary sh be reasonable and fair.
