As I Said again, 66% is NOT swept to victory.
Hell, if you get rid of the SDP clowns, it is not even 66%, could even be 60% PAP votes only.

Not forgetting many people are afraid of the PAP, and vote coz they think the vote can be traced.

Not forgetting many older folks who vote for the PAP, coz they have children or grandchildren working in the govt jobs and are afraid their votes might affect their futures.

The PAP rules by fear, not by respect. You can go ahead and delude yourself by saying they are swept to victory.

I am no frog in the well as well. You have travelled extensively. I have been to UK, France, Spain, Belgium, USA, Korea, Japan, Thailand, Malaysia, Indonesia, China myself. I don't think anyone disagrees with you that our small island has a generally good standard of living. But could it have been better? There were many mistakes made at the higher level that could have been done in better ways, and could have benefitted Singapore greatly. Mistakes made, and they are honest mistakes, those people get to keep their high paying jobs. What sort of improvement will we see if these same people aren't asked to be responsible for mistakes made?

The fact is, the flames of opposition has been fanned this round. The seeds of change has been sown. Watch for the next election. I promised you that in the post-65 population, YOU are a minority.

If one day, we singaporean voted in enough opposition MPs, to the extent that we get to prevent fee hikes, more welfare packages, more upgradings, no COEs, lower taxes, less meritocratic, etc. etc. Our government would have less capital to invest in national-level infrastructure to attract foreign investors, less reserves to battle unforeseen "calamities" like SARS or bird flu, or economic downturn... in the long run, our people would work less hard since life is easier, and singapore loses out to neighbouring countries in terms of our ability to produce better products... do we want this to happen?

Of course we want some opposing voices in parliament, but we need to make sure they are capable people, not there to contribute to numbers...

So as a fellow singaporean, I have two choices. If I vote for PAP, I take the risk that I'll not get opposition in. But if I vote for the opposition, what if too many of them get in and the above scenario takes place? Big question is I don't know how many other people are voting for PAP or opposition... so the safer path might be to vote for PAP.

Nay, I won't flame you, coz this is your honest opinions. But what makes you think that increasing certain welfare equals we cannot compete.

I agree that a fully welfare country will cause the country to go into debt

but a country should not be only caring about money, economy, foreign investment, etc.

I always believe in letting someone try. If they try and succeed, then you have someone to check the PAP. If he is lousy, take him out in the next round.

Remember, absolute power corrupts absolutely. You want to give PAP absolute power?

Hey, I am also newbie here.
I tend to think differently. I feel that, currently looking at the political situation, Singapore will benefit more if we have more opposition.
If we have more opposition,
1) The government will have to work harder knowing they have competition.
2) They will have to think very hard before they increase things such as taxes, fares, etc
3) They will have to account and justify to the people how they intend to use OUR money.
4) the increase of opposition will allow our people to air more views and have more say, instead of being afraid.

I do not think for a moment people will work less hard if we have more opposition. I dont think Singapore will go worse too....
The opposition will contribute to Singaopre by questioning, debating and challenge issues things which they feel is not good for Singapore. LTK and CST are very good examples that they have contributed to Sinagpore.

Also, I am not happy on the way PAP has handled the election, the upgrading carrot, Gomez affair, .....

Hmm... you missed my point... I don't think we should give PAP absolute power, but neither do I want too many opposition to get in to parliament Wink

My point was, there is this dilemma faced by voters... which to vote, given that there's risk either way (i.e. potential of corruption if only PAP, or potential of losing competitive edge if too many opposing voices were introduced for the sake of "opposing")... and this dilemma might be the reason why a good number of them still vote for PAP lor... and to make things worse, nobody really know how many would vote for either side before polling results are out...

WP have made the right move sending a bunch of young new candidates to comtest the PM's AMK GRC.

think about it, even if WP lose, no one will blame them as they are young and it's the PM's GRC afterall. on one expect them to win. they got nothing to lose.

on the other hand, the pressure is on Lee Hsien Long. he needs to win it cos if he lose to a bunch of newbies, he will have no face. so he die die needs to win it by a huge margin.

to add oil to fire, Lim Boon Heng says PM will win by 80% of the votes. more pressure. Laughing

result? 66.13%. even more pressure.

firstly, rpm, welcome to this forum. Secondly, just wanna point out my views regarding some of the things u write here.

I think the opposition here will relish the chance, if they are voted into Parliament by a sizable number. They will purposely ask questions that are irrevelant, and doesn't really concern about the people at all. Sure, LTK, and CST are working hard for their parties, and their respective wards. But that's because they are in the minority. There's only two of them, what can they do? Give them 10-20 seats, and i can assure u, our opposition parties will have a field day trying to oppose just for the sake of oppose, and then claim that they are asking these questions on behalf of the pple.

As for the upgrading carrot, nothing is fair in this world. In a country, there will always be rich and poor, handsome and ugly, tall and short, fat and slim. There will always be a divide. Hougang and Potong Pasir obviously thinks that they have enough facilities in their wards, that they do not need upgrading to bite the upgrading carrot. Its their own choice. Why should the PAP pay for 2 wards that refuses to accept their mandate, and proceed on with upgrading? The PAP have the money and machinery to make upgrading part of their campaign, what's wrong with it? We(those who vote for the PAP) will benefit from it, even if it comes out of our own money. Hougang and Potong Pasir majority decides that they want to stay that way, just too bad.

As for the Gomez affair, PAP is wrong in making it their top topic for almost the entire rallies period, save for the last 2 days. But they have a point. If Gomez make a such boohah out of a form, then how can he run a Constituency? Its an integrity issue. Its like u make a mistake, yet u turn around and point the finger at someone else. U just keep on saying sorry, but u cannot give a proper explaination as to why u did it. Do u expect people to forgive u that easily?
