If we are to set up something alongside the MPs system of
government called CDA, Town Council or Mayors, we should ensure
that there is no overlapping of roles and duties with that provided
by the MPs, the government departments like PA, Ministry of Youth,
and Community Development and ministries.
Singaporeans among the middle to lower income groups have been
going through a tough time from 1970s with citizens retrenched,
wages dropping and MNCs and many businesses pulling out due to high
costs of operations etc.
As a government, it must be aware of such high-cost problems and
our gradual losses in economic competitiveness.
In such a scenario, a caring and entrepreneurial government will
ensure that the taxes paid and surpluses belonging to the people
are prudently spent in bolstering the country's competitiveness and
not splash them on concrete arches, nicer bus stops, more tearing
down of buildings to build newer ones.
It should also not try to increase ministries and departments in
the like of more CDAs, PAs, MYCD, Town Councils and Mayors when the
such functions can be served by existing PAs, HDB, and MPs.
Can one imagine how much of tax payers' monies are being splashed
on all such unessential projects that only look good, suppose to
improve communication of problems and feedbacks and community
development when as can be seen in election 2006 were actually only
built to serve the ruling party in increasing its own
support.
Therefore I consider that our leaders have lost touched with the
ground, failing to understand the unemployment problems affecting
thousands and the high costs which cause deep-seated problems to
its own people.
The tendency to use the billions to splash on big projects and
creating more Mayors to look good from the outside which do not
actually create technology start-ups and jobs and lower our costs
of living is a wrong trend.
Billions are being lost in poorly evaluated overseas projects in an
impulsive manner which could easily be channelled back for
technology job creations, long-term economic re-structuring or
setting up of endowment low-risk fund to earn returns to lower our
high costs of utility and other essential services.
Minimum government can do is to put our surpluses where the mouth
is and we will become a properous country in no time.
We have so many scholars now joining the government becoming MPs
and ministers. Why not let them look at such tendency to splash
taxpayers' hard-earned monies on concrete arches and flower boxes
and channel them to re-position the whole economy, lower costs of
living and create more jobs.
