SINGAPORE : Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong and Minister Mentor Lee
Kuan Yew have won in their defamation suit against the Singapore
Democratic Party.
The High Court ruled in favour of the two leaders after the SDP
failed to file a defence for defamatory remarks made in the January
edition of its newspaper.
A separate court hearing will determine the damages to be paid to
the leaders.
Lawyers say party leader Chee Soon Juan had written to the High
Court last Friday asking for an adjournment for this case.
But the assistant registrar had urged Dr Chee to write to the
lawyers or come to court on Wednesday.
Dr Chee did neither.
Although the case against the Singapore Democratic Party may be
over, the hearing against Dr Chee and his sister Chee Siok Chin
will proceed.
That is because both of them have filed their defences against the
claims made by the Prime Minister and the Minister Mentor.
The matter will be heard once the High Court sets a date.
Lawyer M Ravi, who had originally claimed that he was acting for
the SDP and its Central Executive Committee members, finally
indicated that he would only be acting for the Chee siblings in the
matter
So to date, no defence has been filed by the party.
When the case began in April this year, the SDP stated at the
outset that it would not apologise to the two leaders.
But that pact soon fell through, as all the other CEC members have
apologised, except for Dr Chee and Ms Chee. - CNA /ct
