very simple...
IMHO, essential items are things that you need for yr basic living...food, water, electricity, education and healthcare services
these are things which every singaporean has to get and CANNOT be avoided which is precisely the reason why they shouldn't be taxed!

and if u would...kindly take a look at the bigger picture....not at yr NTUC only...
food might be difficult to identify but surely our 1st world government has a 1st world solution to identify it.
the rest of the items mentioned above i dont see how hard it is to identify.

u can tax the luxury items for 20% but not on these items which everyone be it rich or poor needs to have.

Shouldn't be taxed? Can you know, I can make a whole list can you can everyday be miserable go check this long list what's is what's not... Can go claim here and claim there

1st world govt can solve? The thing is, no one can keep track on the cash reg which item brought is not GST taxed, cos I can only key in the price and it prinys the amt GST paid though I can show them the non GST purchases invoices that is kept for the past 5 years

As for luxury item, I take it that shower cream be taxed 20%, since there's better "essential item" alternative...

i've already made it clear that im talking abt essential items as a whole not to yr NTUC only
if it is as what u've said that food is so damm hard to identify,
tell me if its so hard to identify PUB (water + electricity), EDUCATION, HEALTHCARE (polyclinics + government hospitals)

Of course education (In the 1st place, there's edusave funds though I can say usage is still limited), PUB they can waive the GST

As for healthcare, be fair... You want this, I want that, have you ever thought how much the cost can balloon to?

Food? You might as well as them to scrap the import tarrif

Neighbours? They can do it simply, cos they dun import goods much, most of the products they produce for their own market as well except on items like canned food

if you can spend so much effort rebutting that this idea cannot work, why dont you spend this effort thinking HOW TO MAKE IT WORK...even if not entirely but also partially. EG: u have agreed that PUB shd be exempted.

a partial improvement is better than no improvement.
this short debate has just shown in general how singaporeans mind works.

they just oppose to almost any new ideas dismissing it immediately instead of thinking what it might have been if we try to implement it.

so dont complain when you lose yr jobs to foreign talents...we only have ourselves to blame for our minds being conditioned to being defensive

For taxes

They have to find a way to balance off the + and -. So if I scrap the import tarrif, I have to find another alternate source to collect some of the amt back provided I'm willing to forgo it

Issue is not whether being defensive or not, sometimes ppl are just asking for this and that... Our wants is defintely can come in a long list, but it's how you control them
